Ok, lets rephrase the question.

Does anyone know a motherboard that lets you connect 4 Saphire 7950 GPU's without the need for riser cables ?

The thing is... I have to keep the case closed if that possible, to make use of the sound dampening properties of the case, and also to make it look a bit more presentable. The rig will be in the office of a friend of mine.

I'm now worried that the 4 gpu's wont fit the slots on the board because they are too close together, though.

Hey!

You can read about my config here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/help-with-7950-mining-rig-2k-to-spend-161674

1 - I have two more cards coming in this week and via riser cables, I hope to connect them all to the same motherboard.
I have 4 running and 5 isn't going to be a problem but maybe the PCI-e x1 slot for the 6th card will not power up.
I could only fit 3 cards without raisers, and then I could only mine with two cards, because the gaps between the cards are too small.

2 - If possible, DIY the rack or case, as I've done. I've OC-d my cards to run at 650khash/s each at 60°C.
Without the fan I had lying around, it would be 70-75.

3 - I have a 50 square meter room and I turned off my radiators when I started mining. The ambient temperature outside is about -5 - 0°C  Wink

Hi fellow noobs. ( and old timers )

I'm about to build my first mining rig. It will mine altcoins, but this is not really relevant to the questions I want to ask. My goal is to build a relatively silent rig, because my friend will let me put it in his office for free ( no power costs ) if it doesn't bother him.

First, let me share what I have in mind.

- A nice case with sounddampening material : http://www.nexustek.nl/nexus_prominent5_premium_silent_pc_case.htm,
- 4x Saphire 7950
- GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514, its should be able to take 4 GPU's without the need for risers, thus allowing me to close the case.
- a cheap cpu
- 8 GB ram
- 1k watt PSU

Questions :

1 - Will this board indeed allow me to connect 4 7950's ? I know the speed of the PCI-e ports is not relevant, but there may be something else I'm overlooking

2 - Will it stay cool enough ? I think that case with all those big fan will suck enough cool air inside, constantly refreshing the air between the GPU's. But I don't know. Does anyone have experience with this ?

3 - If I put this rig in a small room with poor ventilation, how hot will it make the room ?

Looking forward to hearing your reactions.

Kind regards, Joeri.
