It is true that the performance of CPU and RAM can help a lot to perform those plots a bit faster.I have tried just for fun with 4 TB HDD Purple Western Digital which is more suitable for surveillance rather than plotting and it took almost a day (18hours) to form a 1 TB plot.My work CPU-core i5 8500 and Ram 16 GB DDR4 in a HP Pro Desk G5.I am sure if I had a better CPU and more RAM it would had plotted 1 TB much faster no matter that the HDD is a spinning one.Still for me is not interesting at all CHIA mining at the moment.I want to see pool earnings before maybe I jump in.

Chia lost 85% of its value from May to September, and this naturally leads to massive sales of HDD and SSD used for mining XCH. In one of the profile Facebook groups, a large number of ads for the sale of HDD and SSD were found. https://e.vnexpress.net/news/business/economy/chia-crypto-miners-sell-hardware-at-a-loss-4349202.html

The Russian segment has been discussing the DDR3 disc for several days. The bet is that the used chips (re-fan) have a cost of ~20 cents per gigabyte. Using the available 4GB chips, you can paste together 1TB for $250. A couple of FPGAs will take another $50. For $300 it will be a very fast disk with unlimited resource. What do you think about this?
The memory speed is sufficient for working in PCIe interface (4-8 Gbit for PCIe and 8-10 Gbit for DDR3).
DDR4 is much more expensive and less readily available. Higher speed can't be used in the PCIe interface, it doesn't make sense to overpay.

This means that server is better for plotting, I'm still planning to build one with some money that I can risk because anything can happen this coin in future, I don't want to shed out thousands of dollars on this and end up with bad news

That's not the case at all. To maximize your plotting efficiency what you need is at least an 8-core CPU to be able to make plots in parallel and a large capacity fast SSD temp drive. Enterprise drives are a better option because they typically have a much higher endurance rating compared to consumer drives, which is what you want if you creating TB of plots a day. Here is a build that can create multiple TB's of plots a day for around $1000 if you shop around and try to save with used parts. Realistically it's probably closer to $1,500 now since a lot of of the parts are in demand.

In my case I was already looking to upgrade my Desktop, so I went with a 3960X Threadripper build that can create lots of parallel plots with ease. Even if Chia doesn't work out, I still got a sweet Desktop out of the deal  Grin

I believe that CPU capability and Ram speed plays a major role when mining chia or say plotting, your CPU have to be gen 9 or gen 10 if it's i series, if it's XEON build then even better, though some XEON are old, Ive ordered for a XEON build server since they have more cores and threads, also 128g ddr4 RAM onboard.

To plot it's better to use 1TB NVME SSD, though avoid running your OS on this ssd

If you are buying gear specifically for CHIA, try and buy a 2TB SSD / NVMe, you will squeeze 1 extra plot out (3 plots fit 1TB, but you can get 7 in 2TB)

ALSO, try and buy Enterprise / Datacentre level SSD / NVMe, the writes KILL drives. you use approx 1.6TBW per 100GB written. So to plot say a 10TB drive, you will use 160 TBW. Most consumer SSD don't have much more life than this. (Make sure to look at Mixed USE, not READ optimised)
I have also read that the enterprise drives have different priorities, so they can deliver the sustained read/writes much better, ie at full speed for the 8 hours needed to plot. My consumer drives even with heatsinks have massive peaks and troughs.

For ref with a Ryzen 1800x, 32GB ram, 1TB NVme, and 1TB SSD, (2 x 3 plots - staggered at 5 minute intervals) i can plot 1.2TB a day MAX.
Hope this helps
Hi, thanks for sharing some light on this, I would like to ask you what a enterprise drive is? A friend told me that server HDD are better because they are build to run 24/7 everyday, how true is this? Are you running your farm on server PC?

No worries.
Enterprise / server / Datacentre all similar - its all to do with their high endurance, and the way the handle simultaneous, multiple continuous read / writes, compared to consumer drives, which generally are optimised for highest performance for single user reads and occasional writes... (thing datacentre ssd, 100's of users all reading / writing at same time 24/7 - this is similar to the plotting usage)

@FP91G are you also into chia coin mining? It seems the risk is very high since it's not trading as well, no one can tell how it's marketcap is going to be or even it's value, I'm going to wait for mining pool first maybe small miners can achieve something out of pool mining, this solo mining thing isn't just for me

It takes 8-10 hours to create one section. Users buy 1 TB SSD disks to form 3 plots at the same time or 2 TB SSD disks to form 6 plots at the same time. With this method, the user will spend a lot of time. Try to count how long it will take to form plots on a 4 TB hard drive
This method is not automated, and time is very important in this mining.

Hello guys, here is a workaround, how you can avoid minimal requirements to the temporary storage size (239Gib = 256GB) and do it on lower SSD.
What do you think about it?

(In short, if you don't want to check video: when memory ends, you should crop 10-15Gb temporary files to another disk, and just after 3 stage started (memory peak usage behind) - return it back asap).
