Bah, I was having a very silly and minor issue with the Catalyst drivers that i didn't catch. Once I got that figured out everything's running perfectly. I was very near deciding to just install windows, but I'm glad I stuck it out and got everything figured out. The linux setup is so much nicer to run headless.

Yeah i've got my main desktop mining right now on Ubuntu, in slush's pool, with poclbm on the command line. I just want to get this other machine doing it rather than on my main machine. I'm confident I can get the mining working, but getting these catalyst drivers working may be a different story, lol.

In general Linux tends to have less overhead than Windows, but Windows tools are developed to the point that they're simple to use.

If you're new to mining, I suggest windows, guiminer, and slush's pool.

After you get comfortable with the flow, you ought to give headless mining a shot. There are two very old prepackaged linux distro's to do this with: BAMT (Big A$$ Miner Thing) and Linuxcoin. Both projects are mothballed, but the basic functionality works - except you'll need to manually add stratum proxy.

I was kinda wondering along the lines of windows, or linux, that kind of thing. I did look into the one you posted though, but it seems like it's no longer being developed.

LinuxCoin

Just burn it to a USB stick and you're ready to go.

There are some other Bitcoin mining distros out there.

Is there any preference for operating systems? Is there any benefits of certain ones?

I'm trying to get a headless ubuntu system going with my Radeon 5850 but the catalyst drivers are just not cooperating. I guess I'm mostly wondering if the days of struggling with catalyst and ubuntu is worth it.
