Not sure if politics even matters when you get to the point of something like Clearview AI — I’d think that this rests on a class issue of rich vs poor again as the rich are going to be the ones that want to use this data for their businesses, personal lives, and so on and so forth.

The struggles of the rich are in the ethereal cloud. You can only fight if you fly up. If you don’t want to fight, you can lie down and roll. However, no matter how you struggle, you will still be in amongst the clouds…

However, the struggle of the poor is always sinking into the quagmire, and hard work is just to prevent oneself from falling any deeper. Once they stop struggling, they will be swallowed by the quagmire.

There’s an entire section on their wikipedia page that talks about their notable associations, which is pretty much just an interesting way to talk about how rich people / businesses used their service for their own personal benefit.

Investor David Scalzo, founder of Kirenaga Partners, said that his "school-aged daughters enjoyed playing with the app"

Pretty horrible to see that people are just using an AI scraping app as a partytrick for their rich friends......

Just a matter of time till each face is used to represent a certain type of person, and the AI uses the lives of a rich and a poor person to reflect the lives of the poor and the rich.

Pretty much my view on the entire thing, though it seems like you've added a lot more 'interesting' thought and storytelling into it.

My view on the matter is that it doesn't matter about your politics once you're rich enough to have access to / use something like Clearview AI. Both parties want to be in control, even if they have to share control with one another. That's the great thing about being very wealthy, it doesn't really matter who is in power (R OR D) because both of them want your campaign contributions and will be beholden to you if you give them enough money.

Nice existence we all have here, right?

and the real ironic thing is clearview founder is buddies with ruby gulianni.. you know trumps go-to guy
yep clearview was invented by a republican

the founders met at a republican club house. the discussions the clubhouse have are about devising new policies to control citizens for the economic gain of the elites.

i wonder if badecker would dare research what republicans really are like. and have the lightbulb moment that he is fangirling the wrong group..
or
just fangirl defend them and flip flop his own morals and stop caring about heath and freedoms.. (like he has done)

There’s an entire section on their wikipedia page that talks about their notable associations, which is pretty much just an interesting way to talk about how rich people / businesses used their service for their own personal benefit. Here are some of the most interesting ones I’ve seen:

The New York Times described early use of Clearview's app as "a secret plaything of the rich", describing it as a perk given to potential investors in their Series A fundraising round. Billionaire John Catsimatidis, a friend of Richard Schwartz, used it to identify someone his daughter dated to "make sure he wasn't a charlatan" and piloted it at one of his Gristedes grocery market in New York City to identify shoplifters. Investor Hal Lambert of Point Bridge Capital described having the app and showing it to friends. Investor David Scalzo, founder of Kirenaga Partners, said that his "school-aged daughters enjoyed playing with the app". Doug Leone, a potential investor at Sequoia Capital, was given access, which was revoked after Sequoia declined to invest. Actor and investor Ashton Kutcher described an app in September 2019 that was likely Clearview. After testing Clearview for accuracy, Nicholas Cassimatis was allowed to continue using the app and described demoing it to people "like a parlor trick".[110][111] Noted far-right "troll king" Charles C. Johnson had an account on Clearview as well as Tor Ekeland and Palmer Luckey.[92]

as for the difference between illegal and unlawful
it is not unlawful to enter another country. no one is physically harmed.
it is illegal to enter another country without the right passes/permissions/invitations.(passport/visa)
so republican narrative of 'build a wall' is not about law its about legal.. yet badecker wanted that wall too

The really ironic thing is, even though many people do lots of illegal stuff, they seldom do any unlawful stuff. It takes a gigantic, corrupt legal system to turn lawful stuff into illegal stuff.

Cool

Totally a lot here but the article is very interesting. Pretty sure a good amount of stuff about spying on American people, from within the US government, is illegal but they get around it with five eyes. Pretty much what happens is that the US (and 5 friendly Western nations) spy on each-others people because there is nothing illegal about spying on people of another nation — then they share this data amongst one another.

Nice way for the US government to get around the 5th amendment.

Don’t quote me on the it being 5 eyes that does this, though I know Snowden spoke about it at some-point when he was whistleblowing.

In a world where data leaks are common should any organization be able to access everyone's photos to track them?

Clearview AI breaking international borders to scrape images

--
Technology company Clearview AI’s scraping of billions of images of people from across the internet represented mass surveillance and was a clear violation of the privacy rights of Canadians.

The American company’s technology allowed law enforcement and commercial organizations to match photographs of unknown people against the company’s databank of more than three billion images, including of Canadians and children, for investigative purposes.

The investigation found Clearview had collected highly sensitive biometric information without the knowledge or consent of individuals, and that it collected, used and disclosed Canadians’ personal information for inappropriate purposes, which cannot be rendered appropriate via consent.

The Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien said Wednesday that Clearview AI conducts mass surveillance, a practice that is “completely unacceptable.”

“What Clearview does is mass surveillance and it is illegal,” said Therrien. “It is an affront to individuals’ privacy rights and inflicts broad-based harm on all members of society who find themselves continually in a police lineup.

Clearview argued that Canadian privacy laws do not apply to its activities because the company does not have a “real and substantial connection” to Canada, and that consent was not required because the information was publicly available.

They already have plans to expand

Clearview states their technology is not for public consumption and meant for law enforcement usage, but their marketing material encouraged users to "run wild" with their use, suggesting searching for family and friends as well as celebrities.

Clearview also indicated they were targeting private security firms and marketed to casinos through Clearview's Jessica Medeiros Garrison.
Clearview planned expansion to many countries, including Brazil, Colombia, and Nigeria, a cluster that Buzzfeed titles "authoritarian regimes" including United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Singapore, and General Data Protection Regulation-following EU countries including Italy, Greece, and Netherlands.
