Just sent the last refund out, so now I'm clear of all obligations of holding money for people. Smiley  Other activity on the wallet was just me picking up two more Gridseed units from Zoomhash, can't beat the new price.

Best wishes to everyone who joined up for this, as I've said before, hopefully someone in the hardware world continues to care about us small fries.  If so, I'll be happy to try this again at another point in time.

Hey Reactor;

Could I get my Bitcoin back that I sent you?

Sure can!

Sorry for the slight delay folks, weekends are pretty much family time since the wife and I both work somewhat demanding jobs during the week.  Sorting through PMs now to get a refund list together, processing transactions, and updating the 2nd post with who has been refunded.

Watching the Hardware thread in case anything new and interesting pops up.  I wanted to do Gridseed, but the logistics and MOQ are beyond what I can handle.  Hopefully someone still cares about taking money from us small fries. Cheesy

Keep me on the list too. You were very honest which is great for a group buy coordinator.

Thanks

Any update on the situation?
Yes, this group buy is now officially closed.  It is Friday night on the east coast of the USA and I've fucking had it with Bitmain and their lack of a response.
hope there's something better (better hw) we can get then! these are expensive anyways. picked a small number from iluvpcs.

Yes, this group buy is now officially closed.  It is Friday night on the east coast of the USA and I've fucking had it with Bitmain and their lack of a response.

To put it into more perspective, the price on these little suckers has not changed in weeks per the official pricing.  This means that the 13.9 price is the same as when S1 units were over 1BTC as now when they're under .9BTC (and sold out).  The 13.9 price is the same as when they sold the S2 units at what is now 8.03BTC a pop.

Quick comparison.  MOQ of U2+ is 1TH @ 13.9BTC.  S2 unit is 1TH @ 8.03BTC.  To quote Chris Brinkley from Up All Night - "You do the math!" To pay almost 6BTC more when their S2 units are currently starting to filter into the market while we're hours away from a ~23% diff increase to over 6bil is just fucking idiocy at this point, so even if they reply back tomorrow that they can take orders, to purchase at this price would just be asinine, especially after the complete and total lack of a response despite multiple attempts at contacting them.

I'll be happy to save the list of folks who replied in case they are going to be offering another USB unit, at which point we can evaluate if it is worth it to drum up another group buy.

For ease, if everyone who PM'd me their txid and has not received a refund could quote that last txid message back to me with an address for your refund it would be awesome.  Otherwise I'll send out PM's tomorrow to anyone who doesn't catch the thread with this info.

If you are in the US and looking, it looks like ssinc has some available, although miro may be snatching some up. Wink

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/closed-sold-out-1895-shipped-bitmain-antminer-20-ghs-u2-usb-miners-548725

Otherwise, I'll be around the forum and will definitely contact everyone if they release another USB unit.  Personally, I can't run any of the 1TH+ machines due to a unique power setup in my rental, so I'm square out of mining if not for USB's and Gridseeds. Smiley

Haven't received a response in that thread yet. That thread from ssinc is selling U2+ (default runs at 2Gh/s already from what I've read). iluvpcs is also having a group buy but only for U2 (based from one of the people that posted there), I cancelled my 10 from him, tried to reconsider my purchase, buy haven't heard back yet (must be pissed at me for changing my mind :p I can imagine...) people on his groupbuy are getting theirs quick though after ordering. iluvpcs also mentioned he has a lot but at a .037BTC price.

Really a bummer this group buy didn't go through. Hope things work out and we can get some other USB miners...

Cheers!

Just mining my own business...

Given that China is cracking down on bitcoin exchanges and banks supporting them, it's possible that BitMain's capital is caught in the ruckus.  If that's the case, then they may not (currently) be able to pay their suppliers, which obviously would have an impact on BitMain's ability to produce more devices.  In this scenario, I can see them trying to evaluate their options before releasing a statement on the situation.

Having said that, it would be a good PR move for them to make SOME kind of statement, at least acknowledging the requests for information from their customers...

I'm willing to let Reactor hold my payment until we get a better idea of where we stand as a customer... as long as it's not too long!   Undecided

Hey reactor... any updates on whether or not this is going to proceed?  I've been unable to get any word back from Bitmain other than what I reported here in this thread a few days ago.  Their website remains as it was yesterday - everything is sold out and no news on future availability or what products are in the pipeline.

This is strange because I got word from them just 2 days ago regarding the S1 that are now "sold out" as it seems. After this no reply though...
Bad customer policy from a factory -they could at least hit you back!
Does anyone know what Bitmain is up to -is it restocking current inventory or are they building new heavy machines?

Ok, so you mean
you have not ordered yet, now they are sold out.
Understandable that you don't want to hold on to that money.
correct?

Btw, if you proceed to order please contact me(pm), I may order a few 20-50 or so.

Short version => I contacted Bitmain, they said let them know when we're getting ready to pay, contacted them when we were getting ready to pay, radio silence for 5 days now.  I understand they are pushing their next big units, but no reply whatsoever is kinda shitty considering I wouldn't have started this if I wasn't told to go for it and let them know when we're ready to order. :/

Are there still some available?
I already bought around 50 units for double the price.
This price is insanely low.

Right now we're in a holding pattern.  This price is only marginally marked up from the single-unit price, however Bitmain isn't responding back to emails or messages on here regarding ordering now that we've been ready to order.  Keep watching, if this goes through we may have some extra units, but I'm not holding onto anyone's cash until Bitmain can respond to my damn email. But since I'm writing here, FFS Bitmain, I wish they would respond.  Just picked up more cheap BTC from Coinbase while the price was in the 420's (insert Silk Road joke here), now I've got close to 4BTC burning a hole in my wallet that is pegged for purchasing hardware from my group.  AHHHH!
that's a good price! (as of now)

Funny you say that, I'm sitting here looking at Bitcoinwisdom right now thinking "Oh man, I thought it was a good price when I picked up at $480 last week!".  Oh well, at least now I know if the price tanks I can file it as a loss on taxes since BTC is now property. :/
That's what many thought when it was at 600-800 range! low 400's might be a great time for a short term hold.
How much loss can we deduct in this case?

Here is a quick fact sheet that an accountant friend pointed me towards:

http://www.irs.gov/uac/Ten-Important-Facts-About-Capital-Gains-and-Losses

Point 8 specifically says that you can report capital losses of up to $3k, however I think you'd have to have some significant bookkeeping because I could only imagine the first few BTC related audits being ugly. Tongue

Hey reactor,

iluvpcs already has his antminer u2's... if the order isnt pushing through anytime soon, let me know, I would love to get a refund... its more expensive to buy from him, but it looks like bitmain will take a while...

Totally understand, say the word and I'll send a refund back.  You had 10 units reserved so it won't hurt the overall order since there were a few folks waiting to see if we had stock left.

IF the order is still happening, I would gladly stay in the group buy... I'd just ask for a refund now so I can buy from somebody else, but dont take me off the list on this one just yet Smiley

Refund sent, but you're still on the list if things go through.

For anyone else - same option is available if you don't want me holding your cash.

Thanks reactor!!! For the people still questioning if he's trustworthy, I think this refund is enough proof right?

Cheers everybody!

That $250 savings is exactly the reason I'm looking into it.  The S1 is pretty efficient, drawing less than 400 watts running at 200GH/s.  My interest here in the U2 was just to see how they'd perform compared to the S1.  The hardware would cost a bunch more at the outset to get 100 U2s (3BTC give or take) vs the <1BTC paid for the S1; however, the U2 farm would consume about half the power of the S1.  Would I make up the difference?  Eventually.  Like the gridseed, the U2 is pretty much a "fun" piece of hardware.  I'll probably end up giving them out to coworkers/friends as gifts to get them into BTC, once I've had my fun playing with them Smiley

I'm not talking about giving anything away, you're a nice person. Smiley

I just wanted to get rid of all of my high heat generating hardware before it gets warm again.  That's why Ants are ideal, I know they won't ROI but they're a way that I can flip on mining for any sha coin that I want to and can still be "in the game" because I'm a hardware geek at heart.

Exactly the reseller I've been looking at.  They've got the best price I've seen (at least among legitimate ones).  Also you gave them a pretty good review in an earlier post, so they'll likely get my business.  As I wrote, this would be more an experiment than anything else.  I don't currently have any kind of scrypt hashing power (my rMBP will only put out about 125k when using both the GPU and CPU).  Getting about triple the rate while also a) not potentially turning my laptop into a very expensive paperweight and b) consuming less than 10 watts at the wall for it?  Yes please.

Yeah, I mean Gridseeds won't really ROI so they're more on the fun side of hardware, but you really never know where the sha/scrypt markets will go if people start pumping money into them again.  Just look at stuff like TRC and PPC, at once point I was up 180% on my investment on both of those, right now I'm floating around 25% (buying and selling on BTC-e).  Now they're worth dirt, but much like with AsicMiner shares I'm being stubborn and holding.  Otherwise the Gridseed miner has worked great pointed at BTCGuild for BTC and their scrypt alternative ScryptGuild without issue, collecting about eight different coins for minimal power usage.  Actually just got my first electric bill since turning off the GPU rigs and switching entirely to my old BFL unit, some AM sticks, and my Gridseed, and saved over $250 this month alone.  Was hoping to add some Ants to that lineup, but, well... we'll see.

Not a problem.  Hopefully they'll get back to you and say, "Oh yes, we've been expecting your order!" Smiley

If this doesn't happen, I'll probably pick up one or two of those gridseed miners to play with.  I've got an RPi, a few USB hubs and a power supply hanging around that could be put to use mining scrypt.

In which case I'd recommend Zoomhash.  I'm actually on the fence between getting more of those or just sitting happy that I picked up a few BTC @ $450.  But Zoomhash was quick to deliver and have good prices for domestic US, especially considering Gridseed direct requires both MOQ of 500 units and the ability to handle the hardware in mainland China. Reactor,

I contacted Bitmain by email yesterday regarding placing an order for U2.  The following is the response from them:

Hi,
U2 is out of stock now, please follow our website store for open sales news.

Hopefully because you previously contacted them about placing an order they might have set some inventory aside for you, but I don't hold out much hope.

I don't even know at this point.  To be perfectly honest, if Bitmain hasn't responded back by the end of the day Friday I'm going to refund people and call this off.  I don't like holding other people's money and getting people's hopes up, I did my part by contacting them before the group buy and doing what they said to do, if they don't plan on responding to me at this point there isn't much else I can do.

Again, holding out hope because they've previously gotten bad at communication when there were technical issues, but after I've followed-up three times I just get irritated.  Angry

I have never orderd with them, but, Last time I missed the order for 500 USBs  by just a few hours. It's a hit or miss when trying to contact them.

Not sure their issue, I've now contacted them on the 29th, 31st, and again today to follow-up on ordering.  If they're seriously not going to respond I'm open to  looking into other options, for example into the Nanofury buy listed here:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/closed-assembly-service-for-bitfury-r2-chips-into-nano-fury-6-usb-miner-545507

If Bitmain doesn't respond/doesn't want our money that's my next spot.  In fact, going to PM them now...

Are you getting the U2+ or the U2s? Because the U2+ wasn't supposed to ship until the 31st, so that may account for the delay.
what's U2+ now? (as compared to U2)

The U2s were what Bitmain shipped on March 5th and are identical to the U2+s with the exception that they are under-clocked to 1.6GH/s by default.

For shipping reference, I purchased another batch of 500 U2+s on March 15th and they have already shipped and will arrive tomorrow. Bitmain closed the sale soon after the 15th (not sure exactly when), so I'm not sure how reactor plans to get on the March 31st shipment wave.

I originally emailed Bitmain when I was musing over the idea of starting a group buy, they responded to let them know when we were prepared for ordering and they could provide details at that point in time, nothing regarding ending of orders.  I contacted Bitmain several days ago to let them know we were going to start collecting funds and to provide further info, since then I have heard nothing back.  That is where I stand with Bitmain.

Had they mentioned an expiry date on the batch, etc., I obviously wouldn't have started a group buy, kept it going, emailed them to let them know we were going to start pooling funds, and actually started to pool funds. Cheesy  Believe me, not looking to do extra work for no end result, but for now I can't quite knock on their door overseas, so I'll have to wait until they respond. Sad

I've found them to be honorable in their dealings and you'll probably be fine. They usually take a couple days to get back to my emails too.

For shipping reference, I purchased another batch of 500 U2+s on March 15th and they have already shipped and will arrive tomorrow. Bitmain closed the sale soon after the 15th (not sure exactly when), so I'm not sure how reactor plans to get on the March 31st shipment wave.

Are you getting the U2+ or the U2s? Because the U2+ wasn't supposed to ship until the 31st, so that may account for the delay.

So bitwizz and iluvpcs look to either have their units or tracking on their units from China, hopefully Bitmain starts responding to PM's and emails regarding the status of the U2 devices.  Not responding to customers about the product isn't up to their normal level of customer service so not sure what the problem is, but I'll keep folks updated.  Right now we're almost at 4btc in the shared wallet for this purchase, 2.117 of which being mine for my portion of the hardware.

Only Bitmain can answer that question, and Bitmain isn't responding very well.  Even if there are technical delays, other folks who are charging more either have units in hand or tracking for their units, so obviously something is in production, however right now we're seemingly back to the early days of Bitmain customer service where updates are few and far in-between. Sad  But that may mean technical delay, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because they make awesome hardware, just gotta let the folks who want to throw money their way know what's going on.

reactor. I need the units I told you. I am little concerned myself too, to send BTC. How can we make this happen and still be very safe. just that you don't have much feedback here, although you have been here for long which I see. What do you guys say? Guys, if you have been here for long, please vouch for him.

Looking at his former posts, nothing seems to be shady, doesn't seem like a spammer or somebody that is just here in the forums haggling people.

I already paid, but would love for somebody to still vouch for reactor just for everybody's peace of mind...
I completely agree. He looks genuine.

I think I'm pretty legit. Smiley

Here's my eBay seller account:

http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=serrinoch

You'll find that my sales activity on there closely corresponds to when I was on group buys with Canary and SSB for the AM sticks.  I've got an Amazon account too, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to find my public feedback page.  Getting too old. Grin

Not sure anything else that would help give folks the warm fuzzies.  I'm a hobbyist like most on here, and if not for the unending delays in withdrawing from Gox I *would* have enough to cover the group buy and have people buy outta that, however things unfolded differently and half my current spendable holdings are in the group buy wallet right now for hardware, so if folks really need escrow the funds just won't be there for paying Bitmain.  I mentioned that in the OP so folks would understand this is just a straight-up group buy.  I've dealt with Canary, SSB, and KosmoKramer for purchases in the past as well as buying hardware off of BTCGuild, so I've been around the block.

Hi reactor, I need the USB s but just slightly concerned about the trust factor. Is there a way philipma1957 or someone who is more trustworthy here on forums can handle this? You handle all transactions but in some way another person is involved too? Please suggest.

Um, full terms are in OP.  If you don't want to participate, there are other folks on here charging 20-30% higher per unit.  Otherwise you can wait until I have them in-hand and check back then.  Smiley

Everyone has been PM'd regarding payment.  For anyone who has paid already, thank you kindly, for everyone else, feel free to wait until I give the go-ahead from Bitmain or send funds now, up to you.

Like I said previously, if this whole thing goes belly-up I'm refunding everything minus a transaction fee since my ultimate goal is to get hardware + get you folks hardware, not to profit from some bullshit "management fees".  I don't charge for my excel skills. Cheesy

Would you like a pre-paid USPS shipping label emailed with the payment info/hash?  I'm in Colorado...

Thanks!

Sorry for not responding!  You're on the list, about to PM you regarding payment details.  This will subtract from the 73 count I had reserved.

Last update for the morning + bump.

Still waiting on Bitmain, otherwise updated second post with shared address so we can be transparent on funds.  Just sent my BTC over there for the group buy and am sending out PM's this morning with what folks owe + shipping if we have discussed it.  Shipping can always be handled later, I don't need those funds to get the hardware from Bitmain, just to get it to you. Cheesy

Feel free to start sending funds in.  If Bitmain decides to say they don't want us throwing thousands of dollars at them I'll refund anyone who pays minus transaction fee (we're all miners, gotta pay our fees!).

You're on the list!

Update: Still waiting to hear from Bitmain.  Today was supposed to be the the GA date for these but don't yet have word back on shipping time estimate, etc.  I'm still going to setup the shared wallet address today so y'all can see me transfer my funds for the units I'm purchasing as well as start sending out PM's for totals for folks, but I won't place the order with Bitmain until we hear back from them.  Also, if we haven't discussed shipping I'm just going to send you the amount for your units, we can always handle shipping down the road when the units are en route or have arrived and we can better check out package sizing options.

Hey all,

In order of appearance - stex, you're down for the upper bounds you PM'd me about if you're interested.  I'll lower my claim appropriately so you get the full amount you requested.

Crypto - waiting on word from Bitmain.  Before I started the group buy the word was to keep tabs on the site and let them know when we're ready to collect payment, right now we're a day away from the ship date they mentioned and a few other folks on the forum with group buys say they have hardware incoming.  Right now I am waiting on a response from Bitmain as to availability since it's basically go-time and we have all 500 units claimed.

As for me, right now I'm picking up cheap BTC on coinbase to help cover my portion.  Thanks to the recent price drop my original 100 units now cost several hundred dollars less than before since I've been waiting and buying on each drop.  Getting .5BTC for $230 was peachy just now, wish my direct deposit had gone through Friday instead of this coming Monday so I could snag some more. Cheesy

Short version - Bitmain has been contacted to let them know we're ready to collect funds and pay them, all 500 units are claimed, you can still jump on and I'll transfer out of my claimed 100 to cover small amounts (but I'm getting at least 40!), so feel free to PM me to ask if you can still get on board.

And with another nice weekend update, finished all the PM's and we're now at a potential 471-481 units claimed!  If anyone else wants to jump in for extra units and we go above and beyond the 500 mark I'll reduce my purchase to accommodate since everyone who joins is helping get this thing off the ground. Smiley

I'll update later on tonight with the shared payment address as well as send amounts to everyone I've discussed shipping with.  Then you just get back to me with the transaction id so we can verify everyone paid all properly. Smiley

Hi folks,

Got a number of PMs and requests to add to the list, but Saturday mornings are reserved for family time so I won't be on the computer until a little later today.

GOOD NEWS! Cheesy

We're over the 400 mark for claimed units now and getting very close to 500!  I'll arrange the joint BTC payment address later today, add it to the second post, and start PM'ing folks with what their purchase price will be and/or shipping rates.

For anyone with a shipping question - it looks like UPS/Fedex/DHL are significantly more expensive than USPS, so if you want a quote try from USA zip code 07701 to your country with an approximate size for the package - the online price will be your shipping price (plus insurance, etc.).  Otherwise I'll be looking at shipping requests later as well.

This is exciting folks, almost ready to pull off a real group buy on here!

Thanks!

Hi,

Can I change my order from 12 to just 10? Thank you!

Done and updated.

We're now 76% of the way to the MOQ.  Once we hit ~450 claimed payment details will be setup and I'll start contacting individuals regarding shipping costs if we haven't already discussed it.

Thanks!  Added to the list!

I'm hoping to have close to the 500 claimed before the weekend so we can get our order over to Bitmain asap.

Edit >> We're almost at 400!  Especially considering other vendors having a price up to .012 BTC higher than the price here (and you sure as heck won't generate that much in a few days), feel free to jump on this.  Once we get close to 500 I'll start sending out payment info and post a public payment address that people can track.

For those interested, keeping this open for another ~96 hours.  If nobody is interested in doing a group buy without all the added markup, feel free to drop me a line.

Just an FYI, we've got a new buyer and I'm upping my buy to 100 units, so all we need is for folks to claim another ~170 and we'll be good to setup payment arrangements as well as start the process for ordering from Bitmain.

I see some movement on the other group buys, but if anyone wants to get together and team up for a real group buy without the big markups involved, feel free to join in.  Sounds like they are shipping the U2's now so the quicker we order => quicker we're hashing, and cheaper than any of the other folks reselling on here.

Not trying to hurt anyone's business, but not willing to pay the markup others are charging for these toys. Smiley

Interested in 12 or more units...

I'd like to ask for people's feedback though about what hub might be good for these, since these are bigger than the U1's... I'm running my U1's on the DLink 7Port Hubs. I think I can only have 3-4 of these U2's in one of those hubs. What hub is good for thick USB miners like these?

The more spacious the hub, the more I will most likely buy...

FYI, I'm also starting to contact Gridseed in regards to reselling for them.  I'll update if I get any good information back. Smiley

Gridseed will not be happening, try ZoomHash, they rocked out the unit I purchased. Cheesy

Update: Payment information is being sent out this morning.  For transparency, the shared payment address is:

1Bdg6Fgw63jmDkFYjDjTqEGJZEdqZ9b1Ez

I'm now sending my amount for 73 units to that address.  I'm willing to sell up to 33 of those at the regular price (.03/ea) if anyone else wants to jump on between now and when I actually get the hardware in hand.

Update 4/2/2014:  Still zero word.  If you want a refund just ask, preferably by responding to one of your PM's from me with the address you want your refund sent to.  Everyone who is on the list can stay there in case we do hear from Bitmain and I'm covering all transaction fees for the refunds.  If I happen to refund you then Bitmain turns around and all is well again, you're still on the list for reserved units.  I can now up my portion of the buy to roughly ~135 units to cover part of the buy if things go through.

Update 4/4/2014: Closed.  Explained fully in this post:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.6076708

But in a nutshell, even if they respond, 13.9BTC for U2 vs. 8.03BTC for S2 + S2's hitting the wild + 6bil diff = insanity.  Will try again if they release another usb unit.

Update: 4/6/2014: Almost all refunds sent.  RCX, Critter, please provide an address for refunds.  I don't feel comfortable just picking the address from the tx, call me paranoid. Cheesy  There is one more outstanding that I need to track down via the txid/PMs, but I promised my daughter I'd go fly kites before she takes her nap and it's about that time.  Done, just RCX and Critter remains.

Hi everyone, long time member, never did the group buy thing before.  It looks like the WinterParker order is turning into a scam since we're getting no word back and I cannot find many other options for a group buy, so I figure I'll run one.

Note: This group buy is only going to happen if we get close to the 500 count.  I can pick up some extras, but won't be left holding the bag.

Pricing is basically the same for everyone, here's the breakdown:

1-4: .03BTC
5-9: .03BTC
10-50: .03BTC
50+: .029BTC

So if you help us get extra close to our MOQ you get a little discount. Smiley

Shipping is going to be from New Jersey, USA (use zip code 07701), so you can calculate out what you think it will be to ship.  I prefer to ship everything flat rate priority so it is tracked and whatnot, but if you want another option just let me know.  If you are international, keep in mind I'm going to insist on a traceable shipping option, but PM me and we can discuss it further.

Any questions?  Drop a message on this thread or send me a message.  Since I'm not footing the funds for this, we're actually doing a group buy, I cannot offer escrow because all funds submitted will be sent to BitMain for the order.  If you aren't cool with this I understand, but again, I'm running a real group buy, not buying in bulk and reselling to you.

I'll update as anything changes and will use the same wallet address for all payments / payment to BitMain.  I'll also update here with reserved order quantities.  I won't ask for any payments to be sent yet, when we get around the ~400 area I'll start collecting payments.  This also give us some room in case they change the price and people can get more for their money.

Thanks!
