Wanna update you all after a long time.

The installed fans where fans with 12V and 0,25A so really less power. I changed 5 fans to Delta Fans 12V 5A and the temperature drops are amazing. In general all 12 Cards are now at 47°C Core and 72°C at mems with overclocking and undervolting. Ambient temperature is 26°C.

So the mem temperature dropped nearly 20°C. I then changed the thermal pads with pads 12,8W/mK and it dropped 2°C more. Not much worth it but some pads where not really soft anymore.

In the end, i´m really happy with it.

people always focus in the "fans of their cases", basically that is "good enough"...what miners should be focusing on is the room temperature. I would say 90% of the problems with cooling can be solved with cooling the room
With closed rigs such as TS wants to buy - it is rather easy to remove hot air out of the room. But even without it - the temperature decreases about 10-15 degrees.

I don't know how ventilation works in a data center, but only industrial ventilation works in mining hotels.
The magic is to keep the outgoing hot air from mixing with the incoming air.
In my country, high temperatures are less than 4 weeks a year, so there is no need to spend a lot of money on ventilation

I am here in New Jersey USA.

May had hot days
June had hot days
July will be worse
August will be as bad as July
Sept will have a few bad days.

So

May 10
June 15
July 20
August 20
Sept 10

75 hot days out of  153 days

Thats the standard pattern we get.

I have access to all the gear at the farm I down clock in the day often due to  heat.

I have 5 s17's down clocked at the moment.

Out gpu room is solid different build no issues.
But when we build out more it may need a fan or two and a wall cut out.

Data centers do not accept mining farms.
They will take the equipment, but it must be installed in a dedicated server rack.
In my country, these are called mining hotels. This may be a production facility that has been converted for mining. Ventilation is supplied there and is regulated by temperature sensors.

Ventilation : throwing 165w of industrial fan volume of 26c ambient temp/nature, you can't heat up nature, nature heats you up if it wants to and cools you if it wants to.

AC : here's 18c of cold air but can do only 1000w worth of compressor cooling if you throw 2000w and above worth of heat, i'm pretty useless.

You will get a good experience, but I would not install 12 such video cards in 1 farm. The more hot video cards are nearby, the more expensive the cooling system is.
If these were super 1660 video cards, then you would not have such problems, but if these are not the cheapest video cards with a poor cooling system.
I understand that data centers have their own requirements, but in my experience, many miners have problems with closed cases on hot video cards. Therefore, it is better to look at the reviews before buying so as not to alter the cooling system several times.

data centers basically deals with typical computers and networking equipment to function as data center, these rooms are likely to be very cold since it is easy to cool them because it is focused in making it function as it meant to be. (AC cooling)

while mining is meant to burn/use as much electricity as possible (heat as a by product) to earn as much as possible, in mining it is easy to burn thousands of watts and cooling it will also require thousands of watts (almost proportional) if AC cooling is used.

miners who approach mining farms as "data centers" are doing it wrong. mining farms are not so data center, it is a completely a different beast.

Next time i will put it under oil.. Nah i think the news fans will do the job. Its like running your home pc during summer with closed or open case. The ambient temperature is the same but with an open case the temperatures of GPU and CPU drops.

I´ve sended the fans today to the mining location. Will write the results here when they installed everything.

Yes the room temperature might be an issue but i can only complain on it, not solve it.

Changing the location is the second option if changing the fans will have no effect. But in the beginning changing fans is cheaper because changing location means:


- Time for searching a legit mining hoster
- Make a new hosting contract
- Cancel the old hosting contract
- Disconnect the rig (no mining during this time)
- Pay for Dissasemble, Pack the rig and shipping costs
- Wait for shipping to the new location
- Maybe some installation problems
- Mine again

If I guessed it correct the cold air in this container is delivered trough the walls and the hot air is in the middle of the container. But i´m not sure. Its very hard to communicate with them.

Do you think I can use the "old" four fans and install them with cable ties in front of the GPU panels?

My RX5700 are downvolted with Bios Mod and unfortunately Samsung Memory. Normally running between 98 to 110W @ ~55Mh/s Ethash. Hole Rig is without power limit @ 666Mh/s and consuming ~1500W out of the wall. With Micron Memory the cards would reach 60Mh/s.

yeah i think you can use the older fans as a pull with the newer ones pushing.

cold air>new fan> case> old fan>hot air

the problem is how cold is the cold 🥶 air going in .

and when the hot air leaves the room does any air curl back into the cold 🥶 aisle.

so pretend cold 🥶 ( good wall) hot 🥵

and zero hot air wraps back to the cold side.  that is an isolated hot cold aisle and even an isolated case which will not let the hot air fold back into the air flow.


even with all that perfect if it is the summer and the cold 🥶 air coming in is 80f or 29c the gear may struggle.

spring time air coming in could be 50f or 10c

you should hang the old fans in front
you should downclock power
and hope for a cool summer.

I run one room with 125kwatts of gear.
it is smoking hot 105f hot side.
and if the day is hot 95f cold side.

I have to down clock ⏰

I have crazy good fans.
it runs well in 8 of 12 months.

Any suggestions about a legit mining hoster in europe in case fan changing won´t help?!

just to let you know, if ever you perfected those "fan solutions"...it is only throwing hot air from from GPUs to the mining room in general, after you maximize the maximum temp potential of the room, there is nothing you can do about it.

Reason why it needs to be closed is because it’s at a data center. The way it works it’s in some rack and cold air goes inside the rack and on the other side it’s exhausted outside the building. It needs to be closed.

Only issue I can find is that it’s a poor design for the heatsink. The air is flowing from side to side instead of going inside the heatsink like it would with a OEM fan attached. Can you leave the OEM fans attached or there won’t be enough clearance for all 12 cards?

Hi all,

currently im facing some temperature issues on my 12 GPU closed mining rig.

It is located in a hosting center and i´m mining ETH with 12x RX5700 with removed gpu fans. Normally the case fans do their job very well with gpu temp at about 55°C and Memtemp at 75°C. Actually the temps are at 75°C GPU and over 100°C at the memory.

I decided to power limit the cards until i found a solution for this. In the hosting center they installed additional fans for the whole room but with no temperature drop at my rig.

Actually there are five 120mm fans installed with around 4000rpm and 130cfm blowing the air out of the case. That means the intake side of cold air is directly on the front panel of each GPU.

I ordered allready new fans with 7500rpm and 280cfm but i´m not sure about the blowing direction.
Is it better to blow the hot air out of the case? So new cold air will be sucked trought the gpu front panel.. or would you blow the air inside the case that the hot air leaves the case trough the gpu front panels?

I will also close all remaining holes in the case with some tape, that the airflow is only trough the GPU`s.

I truly don´t have technical documentation and instructions for this case. It`s a case that you can mostly find on AliExpress and yes, the standard fans blowing the hot air out. Information about the case and installed fans found on the internet is 4000rpm and around 130cfm. I guess the static pressure of these fans are between 14-18mmH2O when i compare them with other fans with similar specs.

I know the case is not the best option but it worked very well before summer and before the room wasn´t completely filled with other mining rigs.


Anyways, i need to improve the cooling and I will replace them with Delta like fans 7500rpm, 280cfm and 25mmH2O. Guess they should be good for better results. Noise doesn`t matter  Grin
Will try to blow out the hot air like it did before and get you some feedback when they changed the fans at the mining location.

Have you looked at the pictures? I guess not. Closed means closed case. So a case like a PC case and i can´t leave it open. Air is flowing from the front panel of the GPU to the outlet where the fans are installed.

And im not thinking about buying a case.. i have one and it is what it is right now. No Discussion about space between cards, i´m only asking for the direction of air flow.

Have you read the technical documentation and instructions for the case?
There should be answers to your questions.
I do not know the models of your video cards, but the principles can be either a cheap cooling system for video cards, or weak fans that you install in your closed case.
There are also unsuccessful cases.

1) You need fans with high static pressure, cfm comes second (and 130 cfm isn't high enough). Look at Deltas.  But they (original ones) are expensive and loud AF.
2) Blowing hot air out usually gives better result. Try both ways and compare.

What do you by the word 'closed' ? If there is any case on that mining rig better leave it opened for air to flow in better and also if you are thinking about buying a closed case with many fans first try separating the rx5700, they do better jobs when there is enough space or gaps between the graphic cards
