The domain sold for $1500 USD on Sedo.

Now here is the interesting part.

Someone at Coinbase's legal team sent me legal demands to simply hand over the domain for free, citing a U.S copyright registration.

I ignored this because:

1. I don't live in the US. The United States has no legal means to enforce it's stupid laws on me.

2. A copyright/trademark registration is just that. It allows you to carry on business using this wordmark or trademark in the United States only AND only for what you specify during your registration. This being:

Providing temporary use of online non-downloadable software for use in electronically trading, storing, sending, receiving, accepting and transmitting digital currency, and managing digital currency payment and exchange transactions

https://trademarks.justia.com/861/37/coinbase-86137226.html

So if anyone here owns a domain similar to a large site. If they ever try to cheap out on you and threaten you with legal action, ignore it. They don't have the ability to seize a domain from you without a court order and they can't get a court order without proof you breached or infringed on whatever they specified above.

Moral of the story ... FUCK COINBASE.

Coinbase themself I assume would have no interest at all, Coinbase has unique meaning/well established and the people would directly enter coinbase.com, and the most important thing is this crypto world is full of scam and phishing, the exchanges will not use alternative domain for traffic redirection, this is more harm than helpful. To be honest what i can say is for an exchange to get alternative domain name with redirection is nothing else than being silly. Just look at all the exchanges' security guidance, the first thing they ask user is to check for valid domain name and valid SSL green certificate.

Sorry to upset you but they won't buy, even binance.io, bitmex.io, bitrex.io....these are sign/ vulnerability of scam.

Given a scenario that they will buy it and make it both domains are valid gateways for the people to come in, what if a scamer make another domain such as coinbase.net, cheat google search engine to get it ranked 1? New comer trying to get in crypto would silly enough to register on the site, input their credit card to buy coin....they are gone, and will accuse Coinbase of not annouching which domains belong to them, etc, blah blah...trouble!

Many companies buying all TLD domains names like his default domain, just to prevent possible fraud using his name. A domain like coinbase.io is ideal for phishing, this way in the free sale has a great chance to serve in the potential cheats.

No response from them or the trademark lawyer they use.

It's a real shame because I think it would be a nice redirect.

Price is $300 firm on anyone messaging me to buy this.

Have you tried contacting coinbase itself? It would make a nice redirect domain for them... I am sure they will buy it from you in a jiffy.

Coinbase proper won't pay you 300 bucks for this? Wow...

Can't currently think of a viable use for me to get this domain, but I'll definitely be back, if that changes...

I bought the domain here on bitcointalk.org a while ago. Domain is hosted on namecheap. First $300 USD BTC takes it.

Verify I own it by visiting http://coinbase.io/

PM me to purchase.

I'll buy it from you for 150$. Pm me if you're still interested in selling it.  Also, do you mind using an escrow for this deal since you're just a member currently??

BTW: This is not an internalized domain right? And no, i'm not going to use it for phishing purposes.

I will use escrow for the deal but wont sell it for less than I paid for it ($300 USD). It's a quality domain, and its not an internalized domain.
