I am almost the same as other users. I use token tracking applications like Blockfolio, and Coinstats to track changes in my current crypto asset prices. and my most important goal is to use coinmarketcap data to continuously monitor inventory and volume circulating from tokens and always monitor Bitcoin behaving in the graph compared to assets or other coins including some coins in Altcoin.

I have a few altcoin holdings and occasionally visit a few alt faucets and get a few airdrops for relatively minimal total value. At some point I found and used an excel spreadsheet formula that pulls current value data from coinmarketcap.com. I integrated that into an existing spreadsheet I use to keep track of my cryptos.  So in my spreadsheet, I track that I own 0.00012345 of altcoin X and I am able to see that I have $12.35 in USD value of that altcoin X. As the price value varies per coinmarketcap, the spreadsheet automatically updates each time that I open it.

I think I heard recently that coinmarketcap.com is going to start charging a fee or requiring a paid subscription for this information (unless I am thoroughly confused or did not hear all of the story and misinterpreted what I heard). Because my holdings are so low, I can't justify paying for that as it will essentially eat up the value of all of my holdings in fairly short order.
EDIT: I do not recall where I heard this or if I even heard it correctly, so I am unable to provide a source link

So my questions = (1) am I correct that the coinmarketcap 'free ride' is coming to an end or did I misinterpret this?
(2) do I have another 'free' option of getting this information automatically updated in my spreadsheet?

If not - I'm okay with that. No sense spending more value than I own just for the convenience of knowing how much my minuscule holdings are fluctuating. But if I can keep this convenience, I would like to do that.   Undecided

maybe you saw the wrong information.
CMC is unlikely to make payments to its users.
even if that happens, it is certain that many other users will switch to other alternatives because obviously CMC has earned a large income from us accessing it.

Hopefully coinmarketcap.com goes away and better alternatives come along.  A lot of times their data is outdated or just float out wrong.  It's much better to get your data feeds directly from the exchanges your trading on.

It would be more pleasant if you mention the source where you got the news.
It would have been better if you had posted that from where you got the information that coinmarketcap.com is going to charge for this thing. Because no such news have been around in the market.
Where did you heard that they are charging fees now?

Can you give us the links?
Also there is no source to the news that you have mentioned about CMC charging for this service. It would have been better to have the proof too.

I had previously indicated in post#7 that I did not have the source where I thought I'd heard this. But since so many have asked after the fact, I have gone back and edited my original post to include this (lack of) information.  Sorry for my omission and doubly sorry if I've become the inadvertent source of mis-information as a result.

Yes, in coinmarketcap you can check the price of your coins updated and you can watch the coin list of the latest coins that have a price of coins that have no prices. Each of coins that are listed in coinmarketcap has their designated smart contract to be seen and it will guide you in how you sell it or trade it. There is also a portion that you will know the newly coins that to be listed in the site.

There are several CMC alternatives like Cryptocompare, Coingecko, Coincap.io, Coincodex. Perhaps you could use one of those to keep your spreadsheet up to date, check to see if one of those provides an API

Yups.cryptocomapre is one of the best for me nowadays, they are sending updates about the price movemennt of this market with graps and value..daily i am receiving emails from them so i dont have to track from time to time..you better try their site OP for your convenience

I used a bot in a telegram that functions like CMC. It even checks the tokens I have in Myetherwallet. But I did not have that bot. If anyone please give me a link.
The functions of many telegrams and bots are based on the coinmarketcap API.

Coinmarketcap doesn't even charge a fee for the listing of the coins and you are saying it will charge to just visit their website. Yes! The API feature charges. But I don't think you need that as you are just willing to know your marketcap.

An open API is now offered by CoinMarketCap, the better and brighter one will give "extra endpoints, more calls, higher rate cutoff points, trade and advertise and authentic information for the business levels," as indicated by an email reaction to CoinDesk from Carylyne Chan, VP of showcasing at CoinMarketCap.

You probably have heard of their "professional" paid API. The price tag might scare you off ($79-$699 per month!) but it won't replace the current API. For example, the most expensive plan extends the available historical data. I don't think that you need any of these features. The target audience are mostly developers and large funds.

Damn the price, I never thought that amount just to use their premium, considering it's just basic feature. I'll just use those some feature mentioned above. So this trader thing is a big help especially for those who are doing this full time but for me I'm still good using delta app and blockfolio for tracking my coins, though it isn't directly connected to exchange sites.

I think yes, coinmartketcap have pro api and we need paid for service. You can use api of etherscan or ethplorer. For me, I use telegram bot to track my ethereum wallet.
Can you please reply with a link for the telegram bot? I lost it with my telegram account that got banned. I would appreciate if you can help me have it back.

Don't bother to use that telegram bot, I used it before but it's too damn annoying for inaccuracy.

Truth be told, one of their ongoing posts was promoting and inviting individuals to utilize their free intend to experiment with their API. I don't figure the CMC will charge expense for its administration since they are as of now taking in substantial income from promotions and tremendous client base, in the event that they execute paid administration they will lose a large portion of their userbase and each one of those clients will be coordinated to some elective free administration.

You can be coordinated API of Coinmarketcap to exceed expectations document, that is so extraordinary, so if conceivable, would you be able to give your record? Also, I recollect CMC simply charge expense for people or associations who need to have an API with premium capacity, and with reference reason, I believe it's free.

I saw only the update of API to version v2 by the end of the year, since I was doing lessons on how to take information from a coinmarketcap in Excel. But nothing on the subject of paid subscription I did not come across. This is not the data that would take money for it and in the end they will simply lose traffic to their site

Again, it boils down as to where you heard this news. I haven't heard anything though to be honest, so its really hard to comment on it. There's a lot of websites similar to coinmarketcap where you can pull your data. Here is a thread wherein we have a discussions about coinmarketcap alternatives: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3094720.5. I already put there a list, just go and check it out.

There really seems to be no reason that cmc will be charging money because they are making a pretty decent revenue. Implementing paid services might result in the loss of the customers which they would not want to happen. It will be better to use an altcoin portfolio so that you will have ease in keeping tracks of the altcoins that you possess.

I do not think the cmc will charge fee for its service becausethey are already making good money from ads and huge userbase, if they implementpaid service they will loose most of their userbase and all those users will be directed to some alternative free service, so i think cmc will not like to loose its daily visitors and users.

Not sure about that but you can use an altcoin portfolio instead that keeps track of all your altcoins. I used to use the cointracking website but that took too much time to maintain, now i just put everything in blockfolio which has 95% of my coins, but doesn't have my new / low volume alts (aka shitcoins)

You can integrated API of Coinmarketcap to excel file, that's so great, so if possible, can you provide your file?

Rather than provide my file (because it is not my own original work and I cannot find the original creator to give him/her the necessary credit due) - you can find several spreadsheet options if you do a Google search for "Cryptocurrency tracker excel CoinMarketCap".  I just don't want to pass off something someone else spent a lot of time putting together and have anyone else get confused into thinking that it is my work; or worse yet, have someone tip me for work that is not mine.  Also - since I did not create it, I could not give any real tech support on getting it setup to work with your data.  I know just enough to be dangerous, but am not all that adept at the underlying spreadsheet coding and most of my alterations are simply made through trial and error.

That's the thing - I don't even think that I read it - I think it was something I heard on the radio or in a tech podcast (no idea which one as I listen to several and didn't keep track of listened/deleted episodes). It was one of those situations where I wasn't listening closely and just had it playing in the background as background noise. Sorry for my inattentiveness!

Went through their social media and I don't see them mentioning that they will remove their "free plan" from their API.  In fact one of their recent post was advertising and welcoming people to use their free plan to try out their API. You were probably misinformed or it was me that missed out. Anyways, try googling and you might find your answer. Or use other sites the users provided above.

What do you really worry about? If there are still many alternatives other than CMC, I think other sites are more accurate than CMC.

Yes - in the end it is really not a big deal either way and I may have jumped the gun in asking my question. I will probably just continue on as I am - business as usual - and then if the sheet calculation goes wonky somewhere down the road, I can just deal with it at that point. It's not like it will impact my bottom line.

Thanks, I'll look into those options. I was trying to find the source of the page I inserted into my excel file to see what if anything he/she recommended.  I am pretty sure that formula came from someone in Bitcointalk, but I didn't bookmark a thread and so far I haven't found his/her thread in the search feature.  I may just need to do some more digging and experimenting. If I am correct, I think I have until the end of the year to keep using the coinmarketcap API.

Undecided
