Hello Bitcointalk community!

UPD

Commun - the decentralized social network celebrates the 3rd month of activities Wink

We are happy to welcome new users on our platform and happy to share results, and we do believe that any of us can help Commun grow!

Let’s sum up the current results of the last 6 weeks of activities!

Roll Eyes During the last 6 weeks, we’ve reached 12 000 monthly active users. They published 24 641 posts, wrote 14 629 comments, got 117 700 likes, and over 19 million rewards.

The number of community leaders, authors, and voters also increased. Now there are 71 community leaders on the platform, 60 unique authors and 93 unique voters daily.

⠀⠀

This month we’ve released a lot of updates on Commun:

Registration with the Facebook account or email.

Referral system. Share posts and links to Commun with your friends or on other social networks and get 1 CMN token for every user registered from your link + 5% of their purchases on the platform.

Localization. Filter communities in the Discovery by language. The list of languages will grow longer with the new communities created.

Hot / Trending. The "Hot" now has its separate slot on the side panel. Also, sort popular posts in "Trending" by 24h, a week, or all the time.

View posts in the blockchain explorer.

Purchase of CMN tokens with a card. It’s now possible to buy CMN tokens using your card, like with many other internet-purchases.

Custom passwords. Forget about complex unmemorable keys. Create your own, keep it, and access your account easily.

Hints. We’ve added them to help you get familiarized with Commun. Learn how to create your posts, how does the voting work, how to get Community Points.

Registration in the mobile WEB. Now you can create your account right in the mobile web version of Commun

MyFeed. Publish posts not only to the particular community but to My Feed on Commun. The functionality of “My Feed” is the same as any other community, except that those posts will show in your feed and will be shown to your friends only.

Android App. We’ve launched the native app for Android devices. It feels better, works faster, and makes your experience of Commun more convenient.

In the middle of the month, we shared with you our manifesto, created by our CTO. This manifesto reveals the main idea and philosophy behind Commun. If you haven't read it yet, this is the right time! Check it below in this post.

⠀⠀

Apart from updates, we’ve got new amazing partners on Commun!

The dankest meme lords of the internet - Dank Meme https://commun.com/dankmeme - are settled on Commun. In 2 weeks 200 members joined their community, and 179 claimed Dank Meme bounty Points (You can still get them!). As well as the community on Commun, we’ve created a Commun/Meme page on Facebook, which already has 1 500 subscribers! Take a look at it - https://www.facebook.com/communmeme/

Another partner of Commun is ForkLog, a progressive media outlet covering the most important news about cryptocurrencies & blockchain and delivering investigations, guides, expert opinions on bitcoin price, digital assets, and mining since 2015.

Join their community - https://commun.com/forklog

ForkLog wasn’t the only media that decided to join Commun. NewsBTC, a news service that covers bitcoin news, technical analysis & forecasts for bitcoin and other altcoins, created its community today https://commun.com/newsbtc, but will develop it in future, sharing articles and updates with you!

As the final accord of the month, we launched the fEXIT campaign. The main goal of this campaign is to reclaim the control over users’ personal information, transfer community management into the hands of their members, reward users’ intellectual work through algorithms, and work towards a fair distribution of monetization through ad revenue. Join fEXIT! https://commun.com/fexit

Commun is gaining momentum, and we are going to proceed with updates and new features, advancing our platform. And every one of you can help us grow: share links from Commun to other networks, invite your friends to Commun, launch a contest or any other promo campaign of your own, or let us know about communities that you could help us to bring to Commun.

Together we can do everything!

The Commun/ Manifesto

It’s been 3 months since we launched Commun/ in a Cyberway mainnet and it appears that the machine that we’ve built works well in practice. However, lots of users still have questions about how Commun.com works.

Commun/, in the first place, is people united by shared interests and the interaction between them. People have vast experience in creating and organizing communities, for example, communes, diasporas, volunteering, cooperatives, associations, and so on. At the end of the 20th century, one of the most significant communities of our times emerged - the internet community. At first sight, the architecture was as easy as all works of genius: decentralized and free. You could surf the ocean of websites of people from all around the world, going from one hyperlink to another; or create your website and publish everything of your interest - articles, pics, programs, links to the websites that you liked, and others would post links to yours.

Seemed idyllic, right? Yet you already know how this all ended. It’s now considered that our data doesn’t belong to us anymore. If before we could publish our webpage even on our computer, then now we are forced to provide all our data to the internet giants.

Apart from this, throughout the development of the internet, governments and corporations became very interested in it, which led to the problems of political censorship and copyright-related limitations. Social networks can ban or delete our accounts if their content doesn’t fit the rules, or you can even be prosecuted for just one careless post. We’ve lost the decentralization, and therefore freedom.

And here we are again, thinking if we should get decentralization back but in another form, one that lacks the flaws of the first try.

Developing Commun/, we wanted to create an environment and a set of tools that will allow people to create fully self-governed communities. Often when discussing communities, the term “freedom of speech” appears in the context - indeed, it is the value that we share. However, equally often  “freedom of speech” comes as cover for expressing ideas that contravene the ethical norms of the sane democratic society of the 21st century. This is why it is necessary to follow particular rules.

Rules

The rules are crucially important. If the rules are well-established, they reduce tension a lot. In contrast, poorly-established or ignored ones can lead to discords and difficulties, which will scare off the majority, leaving the arguing group at the head of the table.

Commun/ allows members of every community to set up their rules, which will fit every particular case. These rules are stored in the blockchain, making them publicly accessible for every participant of the system. It also allows to reach a consensus between members of the community and avoid controversial wordings, as the rules are set up by leaders chosen by the community.

Governance

Just because the majority of people are way too nice, we need symbolic leaders or “owners”, who will become the main arbitrators in dealing with conflicts. On our platform, we developed the mechanics of election and the ranging of Leaders in the list. Every user has a right to elect the leader of the community he/she is subscribed to. Based on this transparent and honest election and with the help of the smart contract pledged to a particular part of the system, users decide themselves who and for what period of time is included in the list of Leaders. This is possible due to the implemented principles of liquid democracy. Liquid democracy is a form of delegate democracy, combining the advantages of direct and representative democracies.*** Liquid democracy has a low entry barrier. Becoming a leader requires only the wish and trust of the voter. There are no rules, laws, or limits in that, which simplifies the representation of minorities in structures or organizations. Despite that, liquid democracy makes the responsibility of the leader more explicit. A leader who has lost the trust of users can be immediately suspended from community management. Being a leader of the community isn’t just a scope of duties, it’s also a privilege. The leader listed in the managing group of leaders receives community-assigned royalties, and this is possible because each community has its own economics.

Economics

In the era of informational technologies, our attention has become the most valuable resource. Before that, those resources were food, land, and capital. Now the economics will be built around the attention of people. Information, as is, costs little, but the knowledge gained from that information is what pushes the progress forward. This is how Albert Wenger** thinks, proposing the new model - The Knowledge Loop.
⠀⠀

To adjust to the new world, we need to hurry up. States and governments can speed up the transition from the industrial era to the era of knowledge. To be the first, we need to work towards the expansion of basic freedoms. One of them is…

Informational freedom

Every human must have unlimited access to information. States should stop political censorship and stop setting up national firewalls. Providers should stop following principles of network neutrality and give their preferences to one sort of traffic. Internet-monopolies should open their API for individual access. This way, users could limit manipulations with their data performed by platforms. AdBlock is an example of users’ protest against intrusive business-models. In terms of society, any limitations of consuming the digital content are meaningless, because costs of marginal distribution are equal to zero.

Thanks to the P2P network - a basis of the architecture - it is practically impossible to block Commun/. The information is stored in a variety of Nodes of the Cyberway network, doesn’t have a single node of failure, and can be restored by anyone. This approach provides advantages in storage and distribution of the information. However, as we all know, the storage of the information in networks like Cyberway requires particular resources. In Commun/, we liberate the user from the need to pay for the use of network resources and provide the bandwidth for all, without exception. In the future, depending on the actions of the user (if they contradict the rules of a particular community or the whole platform), leaders could deny the free user access to network resources. Nevertheless, even such users can continue to use Commun/ but providing the bandwidth for him/herself.

Economic freedom

We are only at the beginning of the global public discussion, and the first moves in the establishment of this institution in the progressive countries is a harbinger of change. What if Nassim Taleb* is right, and the working day from 9 am to 5 pm is a modern form of slavery, and our descendants from the era of knowledge will be looking at us regretfully, the same as we look at slaves from primitive societies.

We believe that everybody should be able to participate in the Knowledge Loop.

Commun/ allows the community to establish its own economy, in which transparency is guaranteed by smart contracts. Every community has its own Points. Community members can get Points, and there are several ways to do it:
 ⠀
Content creation or distribution of existing content is rewarded with Community Points if other members have appreciated it (with upvotes). Users who participate in the ranging of content can be rewarded with Points as well if evaluated content was of interest to a sufficient number of community members.

The leaders mentioned above receive rewards for their work in Community Points if community members agree with their performance. Community Points are redeemable with a basis currency - Commun token - according to the rate that is determined algorithmically, and can be transferred to a bank card or converted to other cryptocurrencies.

Here I have outlined only the “tip of an iceberg” - our main ideas and values. In my following articles, I’m going to reveal details of the general economic model and the possibilities of the establishment of the economy of every particular community. Also I’ll explain how exactly we realize the mentioned principle of a liquid democracy on Commun/, how the decentralization works and much, much more.

About Commun

Commun.com is a blockchain-based social network comprised of Decentralized Autonomous Communities (DAC), which serves as a web, Android, and iOS portal where users can form interest-based groups to share, read, watch, rank, and discuss content with like-minded people. We are a fully self-funded, non-ICO project, which is security-oriented and based on smart contracts.

Commun is built atop of Cyberway, EOS-based blockchain with a modified bandwidth system. We built a decentralized network of autonomous communities, where each community has its own Points. On average, Commun enjoys 180-250 unique daily visitors and awards 500,000 points daily. Commun points could be used to vote for content within the communities and, in the near future, to pay for different community offerings. They can also be converted into Commun tokens (CMN) via the Bonding Curve mechanism. This algorithm assures token continual liquidity. Unlike other platforms, each community on Commun has its own unique token.

Communities are in the hands of users and are governed by leaders who are elected by users. The most successful posts/comments are rewarded with the Community Points within each community.
