There are several supply chain projects out there that are about showing the provenance of a product by recording its history from supplier to customer on the blockchain. This is a good idea because fake products, especially food and drugs, are a huge problem that leads to a lot of economic loss and deaths every year.

One of the ways to connect the actual product to the data on the blockchain is by attaching an inexpensive chip to the product's package. The problem with this approach is that you can just take the real product out of the package and replace it with a fake. Another problem is that some products, for example antique paintings, don't have packages and can't have chips permanently attached to them as far as I know.

Does anyone know of any solutions to this problem? In other words, are there any reliable ways to connect physicals object to unique digital records?
