I use aluminum on as the frame and lay my motherboard down on some pine.  It's fun to build but takes a bit more time than just buying a wire cart.  It's probably more expensive as well.  I think mine cost somewhere in the $50-60 range for materials (3x 96in angle aluminum [$15 ea.], 2x 96in pine [$2 ea.], 8x grommets [$0.50-$1 ea.], various screws [$5 tops]).

I think a wire frame works fine.  I have just become accustomed to the above.

All of my rigs are wood frames on wire racked shelves. They have been running over a year this way with no other problems.

I'm considering some wire shelving racks but I'm concerned about shorting something. Is aluminum still considered the best option? I was thinking about wood but am concerned about conductivity with moisture. Any thoughts?
