I came around a post that reminded me of this very topic "WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE, YOU DON'T NEED and this very phrase was instilled long ago in me when I was still in school and upon a close research, I've also noticed that one of the greatest weakness of the youth is contentment and desperation.

I really think that if we have a society with more of contented citizens and youth, then the world could be a better place. Wats your take ?
being too contented weakens the soul,it also make you feel less concern to strive for more in life.
One don't need to be more contented cause you have to work hard and fight for your future and your career every single day.you keep on trying even if you have enough.

I think your words tend to always be grateful for what is there and not see what other people have, which is not in us.

satisfaction is something we want fulfilled right? So, if you are satisfied, then all your wishes are fulfilled, right? I think satisfaction is an ever-present desire. so it's better to replace satisfaction with gratitude. because being grateful is being thank you to god and being able to accept circumstances.

Greatest weakness?
Well, I'd say that being content is one of the strengths that every individual can have. Because too many people are not satisfied and contented with what they have.
Contentment is one key to being successful and happy in life.

Minimalist ideology has been around far longer than most realize.

Quote
"The root of suffering is attachment." (to material possessions)

-Buddha

"Minimalism does not imply not owning things. Only that things, do not own you."

It may seem counter intuitive. But some of the happiest children I've seen were the ones living in poverty with few worldly possessions. While by contrast some of the more miserable children I've seen were ones with a wealth of material abundance.

At some level an overabundance of worldly possessions could cause us to forget what is important in life. While the opposite may also be true.

The world would never be a better place to live in but of course it always differs on someones perception and experiences on their current living but on general sense then it wont really be that simple on attaining or
acquiring it.If we do speak about contentment and desperation then you could really expect something like this on a world that really strives and being competent on making our lives more better.
We do always aim and hope on whats the best. This is why dont make yourself get fall behind the line and thats why i dont really see this to be a negative thing most of the time.
You are living on a world which competition is high and if you dont do something then you would really be striving and wont able to get on what you do like to have.

This is a case to case basis, many needs a lot of things and yet they don’t have the capacity to have it while others already have their desire and yet still not contented for what they have. In this society many prefers a lot of materials things just to impress others and this is wrong, but then again if you have the capacity to get it, then get it. Let’s just be happy for everyones success here and help other people who really have no means at all.

What you don't have you don't need because you can't afford it and not because you are contended and it also doesn't stop you from working towards having that thing.
Human wants are insatiable, we always wish to have more, it is in human nature so don't expect anything less because people will always work towards satisfying their needs.
Well it’s kind of reverse psychology. Because the truth in life is, what you don’t have then the more that you will shape up your life and do better so you can have them in the future. I guess humans are just like this, they won’t look for something or crave for if it’s already there, the only reason that they will look for it because it’s something that they don’t have so they should always work hard to achieve it finally.

The problem is no one gets life’s contentment and satisfaction as we are born with greed and that is something that is undeniable. Yes, we could live in a better place if it’s possible, but knowing we always go for what we need and what we want even if it seems unrealistic to us, then probably depression is the thing next to being uncontented and dissatisfaction. Something that we need to accept, but somehow it can be avoided if we always act the right way in the first place.

A concept for cultivating a submissive biomass, instead of a country's population. This is essentially a slave ideology, or the ideology of a weak-willed, unfree society. A certain semblance of several decades was formed in a country like the USSR. There, too, "postulates" were driven into the heads of the entire population:
1. Living in abundance is evil
2. Having good things and a lot is indecent
3. We must endure and work as "ordered by the motherland"
4. The high standard of living in other countries is all a lie, these are attempts to deceive you and turn away from the great idea of \u200b\u200b"communism"
5. Even a folk saying existed "we did not live richly - and there was nothing to start"

I prefer to say appetite comes with eating. I do think that I need things that I don't have, but when I get them I start to crave other things and so on. We're never satisfied with what we have, but we do desire things we don't have and may find the use for them.

For instance, I could live without a car, but it was a pain to travel by bus. When I got a car, I found out that it's a huge help, but after a year I had problems during winter on snowy roads, so I begun to look for a 4x4 car with more power. When I finally got that, my daughter was born and I needed a bigger car. We always want something that we don't have and believe me, we often need it.

There are still things that we don't have yet we need them. Maybe the things that you're about are luxurious stuff that we don't really need but we want but sometimes contentment can't be a good motivation for us to strive more and to reach success. Being contented when we haven't reached our achievements will not make us live comfortably. We can't stay poor and be contented. If we'll have a chance to strive and hustle then we must grind for us to have a comfortable living. The things that we want must be our motivation.

Am I missing something or is the quote kinda dumb? That quote obviously only applies to wants, obviously it doesn't apply with needs.

You’re not missing anything. And you’re right; that quote actually doesn’t make any sense.
The contentment part is fine and all; but the rest, not so much.

This is not possible to see like if you follow the economic phrase too that says human wants are insatiable. So it is a human attribute or character to want things and if they want many things they keep looking for the satisfaction and the satisfaction is to get that thing. That phrase of yours of "what you don't have, you don't need" is not proper because you only can think you don't need it because that you don't have it, I think I put it in another way  Grin. You know everyone like to have good life but we need caution and moderate.

i actually do need what i don't have.

so, that phrase don't make any sense at all.

So you really have to work for it. And not wishing for it.
That phrase was related to contentment as many people mostly youth tend to quest for what others have laboured for and at the end might want too get it by crook or by hook and this truly isn't a nice or positive motive for a country.

Contentment is a good virtue and greed would be eliminated only if everyone is content; but not everyone is and can be content so there would always be greed.
The phrase “what you don’t have, you don’t need” in my opinion, is totally false and I would disagree with you.

Picture an individual without fingers on his hand. He obviously doesn’t have fingers but I would say he would definitely need them.
