Edit: I reported one of those yesterday, 20 minutes before they added the reference link. This morning it was marked as unhandled, and now it is marked as bad, despite the person being banned for plagiarism.. Oh well …
I think the best practice when it comes to reporting such cases is to include an archived version of the thread on our reports.

In that case I deserve a ban too Sad I sometimes mess up my quotes before I correct them.
Mistakes get made, and if someone corrects them and learns from it, I don't think that deserves a ban.
I guess that falls into a grey area...

In this case though, and that's something I've seen from many accounts, I think a new rule is needed: copying an article just to promote a website shouldn't be allowed at all!
I second that.
- Lucius did link to a rule related to this issue but the latter part of it, allows such users to easily abuse it...

We have a rule for that :

Advertisements (including signatures within the post area) in posts aren't allowed unless the post is in a thread you started and is really substantial and useful.

Copy pasting a news is different though, but for an article I guess it's a shame that we allow it. Both the topic have added nothing new just shared the text of the referenced article.
New rules regarding copy paste with reference must be developed to prevent this.

Their first post doesn't include any source links but when people mentioned it they quickly added it. But hypothetically speaking if I'm judging their posts right now (with source links on the OP) I couldn't count their methods of copying and pasting the article in their thread can be counted as plagiarism as for one they aren't taking credit that they made the post itself the source link alone should justify that they are providing the readers the original source of the body of their thread. I myself don't mind it as long as their posts have reference links for the original work it actually saves my time on reading the posts at the same time reading the article without switching to tabs just to see both.

I also don't think that the copy/paste article+reference link without any comment or added note should be allow to post as it does not mean anything but to add a post count on the account, I think more of it as qualified plagiarism. I see that the first link poster is already banned and the other is not yet banned but sooner or later he will get proper sanction.
No, you are wrong.
You will not be banned as plagiarism if you use quote or leave links to original sources.

Those users got banned because they did not leave sources to original sites/ articles at beginnings. They only did it when someone gave them how to do it (I guess so). You can see those topics were edited (......).

I checked. The others gave warnings to OP in second posts of those topics. Sure, they got banned because of plagiarism at beginnings.

There are other things moderator who handle reports of plagiarism will consider before using their Ban Hammers.

If one does not know rule asks for sources, and edits initial post with sources, I think he or she will be fine. Nevertheless, if he/she repeatedly does it in 5, 10 posts/topics (without source intially, then edited when the others found sources and comment) I think he/she deserves bans because there is no excuse for plagiarism when you clearly know what you are doing and clearly know rule on plagiarism.

With or without reference link as long as he did not put any effort on posting by just copying/pasting it that should be consider as plagiarism or at least prohibited on this forum to avoid incompetent posters.
Wrong again!
Plagiarism is when you steal words or any kind of 'products' from someone else without links, sources, quotes, and ask for their permissions (like campaign OP formats).

With low- or zero-value posts repeatedly, users can get banned but sort of bans is temporary as I know.

1. Copy and paste without source: Permanent ban
Without good net effects: permanently permanent ban (ban appeal fails)

2. Copy and paste with source, without own opinion and good points: zero-valued posts >>> trashed.
The second situation is same as spam, it looks better (not one line, one word) but the value is as same as zero.

People can argue that "Oh, that user copies, pastes from sites/ articles but he/she actually gives us very important information. It does not make sense. At least, poster has to add some warnings on what kind of news and how important it is he/she brings to the forum (for readers).

I have seen many such posts before. Where the author just copies the article from other website and post all things of the article in this forum and lastly add a reference link in that post. All the words of articles copied from another website even nothing is written by the author itself. But I can not report these posts because of a reference link added there. I am totally against them. Only some valuable things should be copied with a reference link is normal I think, but when a user copy-paste all the things of an article is really bad habits.

There are two types of people who do this more.

1. The user who has a blog/website: Whose main motive is to increase traffic to his own site.

2. Some lower rank people: They just try to make fool some people by sharing a full article from another place like his own for getting some merit.

In this case though, and that's something I've seen from many accounts, I think a new rule is needed: copying an article just to promote a website shouldn't be allowed at all!

I do not agree with such posting, without source link it is just plagiarism, and with the source link, it is in the category of "zero or low value, pointless or uninteresting posts or threads".

There are at least a dozen users currently posting by copy/pasting and by adding few lines of their comment. As far as I can see this is permissible because most of my reports stay unhandled, although it is quite visible from user/s post history that the primary goal of such posting is only promoting of certain web pages.

Some examples :

User cheezcarls : https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/cheezcarls-254229
User cryptomarketyourself : https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/cryptomarketyourself-2613532

We have a rule for that :

I have found 2 articles here which are directly copy pasted and shared a reference link.
Article 1- https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/simplified-bitcoin-wallets-list-beginner-friendly-5204336
Article 2- https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/explained-running-bitcoin-full-node-5204280

Both the articles are copy pasted and the writer have added nothing new. Reference can be added for copy/paste a tiny portion of a big article; for proof of a statement or give credit to the original author of a statement. But copy paste of the whole text is really something ridiculous. This doesn't have any purpose other than increasing the post counts.

There are already rules for this and this can be reported to the moderator. The link for it is at the right hand corner of the post.it is referred to as plagiarism. This may either be deleted, or not counted and is still noted as spam.

I reported Rose_btc for another thread (now deleted] which was entirely copy and pasted without a source, and they were banned for it. Usually users like this are repeat offenders, and if they've "fixed" one of their threads by including a link, you can usually find another thread in their post history that they can be banned for.

I agree that this behavior is completely scummy. Copying someone else's work entirely, and adding nothing of your own - not a single original thought, comment, opinion, even a question - should be considered plagiarism whether or not you add a URL at the bottom or not. It is completely zero effort and is only used to spam signatures or farm merit.

Neither case had the source link initially, and were probably saved just in time from being banned by being quick to add it after seeing some of the comments on the threads.
One of them is already banned [Rose_btc] and the other one might/should be next [elsons].

Generally, I find these sort of posts upsetting, since they do not add anything of their own such as a summary, a versed opinion, or a rebuttal of any of the points within. It may or may not start a debate, that could lead somewhere, but it does show no will to dissect the article nor to place any effort behind.

They probably already fall under rule number 1;
1. No zero or low value, pointless or uninteresting posts or threads. [1][e]
I recall reporting posts of a kind and them being deleted (but it may also depend on how much activity has been developed in the thread after the OP).

<…>
Yep. I figure that, as is being discussed laterally in another thread (see Cancel reports?), the time of events may be taken into consideration when dealing with a case (i.e. post was edited to add a link, but reports for plagiarism were already there in the queue, before the link was added).

Edit: I reported one of those yesterday, 20 minutes before they added the reference link. This morning it was marked as unhandled, and now it is marked as bad, despite the person being banned for plagiarism.. Oh well …

And in both cases the source was not included until it was pointed out by other users, so it was plagiarism then. But with the source link edited into the text, it cannot be reported for plagiarism. You can still report it as a low quality post however as little or no effort was put into it and no new idea was shared.
