Just writing some code
If port 8333 is not forwarded, then 8 connections are the max and not contributing to the network.
Not true. Outbound connections are still contributing to the network since the node still relays all valid transactions and blocks to its 8 peers, even though they are outbound. More contribution can be done with allowing incoming connections, but they are not necessary to be "contributing".

I think the more the merrier, but really depending on your bandwidth.

nice, so 10 isn't horrid.. and anything over 40 may be overkill for some home "broadband" hookups.

thanks franky1!

well the theory of the 7 degree's of separation is that if each person knew 7 people, they could easily find any link to another person in the world by finding out who knows who.

eg i am only 4 connections away from britney spears, making me 5 connections away from justin timberlake and christina aguilera. aswell as madonna etc.

im 3 connections away from bill gates

so if you look at the maths of
77

is 800,000 connections. so more then enough for the 6000 nodes 133 times over

so 66 is over 46,000 connections which is over 7 times the needed amount

so 6 outbound connections is the ulitmate minimum for everyone to be a good part of the network. but the more connections you have the more data you can send simultaneously rather than letting your peers hop the data on

the only time there is too many is when it starts impacting your connection speed.
i seen someone recently complain that on his slow connection he was having issues.. then revealed he had over 36 connections.. so told him to bring that number down to smooth out the connection

I figured 10 was enough on a limited bandwidth connection.. i believe the first 8 are reserved for outbound, leaving 2 for inbound.

what do you all figure?
