Thanks for the vote of confidence.  Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of hope that this wallet will be recoverable.  I'd be willing to take a look at it, but don't get your hopes up.

Which pywallet? There are two branches
https://github.com/joric/pywallet
https://github.com/jackjack-jj/pywallet

There's also another tool which tries to recover keys from disk:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bitcoin-private-keywalletdat-data-recovery-tool-25091

Even though you recovered something, don't use the drive which contained the wallet. If it's eg a USB device, keep it unplugged.
If you have an old PC you can install Linux there; or use a virtual machine.
The last option is, as mentioned, to find someone trustworthy and hand over your recovered wallet.

Can you upload the private key Grin? JK, but seriously, in order to fix the file you need to show the file. Judging that you won't trust anyone with a wallet that has 4 BTC in it you should hand it over to the admins for help. BTW if during the period of the deleting of the file and you recovering it any downloads, auto-saves, caches, etc. used the original memory for the key then you're basically screwed. Still, better off give it to the professionals or the admins, you wouldn't find anyone trustworthy in the newbie section.

Note: the above is just my opinion

Dear all,

After a brief stint of mining in 2011 I ended up with a little over 4 BTC.  Unfortunately, some time ago, I ended up deleting the associated wallet file.

I have since recovered the wallet.dat using a data recovery tool, however, it appears to be corrupted.  Bitcoin QT doesn't like it.

I've tried every method possible using my limited computing skills and I can't get the private key out of the file.  Pywallet gives me the "try quitting bitcoin and running this again" error, even though bitcoin isnt running.  Have tried using different drives, checking permissions, etc.  Still no good.

Unfortunately I don't have access to (or know) how to use linux so i haven't explored any of those associated options.

I know the bitcoin address, and using blockchain.info I have been able to confirm that the coins are still attached to it.

Not sure if this is a reasonable bounty but i'll start with 1 BTC.  Obviously, I will only hand the file over to trustworthy/established members.

Thanks.
