Both COTI, Currency of the Internet and IOTA are cryptocurrencies that are based on directed acyclic graphs (DAG), as opposed to blockchains like many other digital currencies. In addition to being a cryptocurrency, COTI is also an online payment system that offers multi-currency support. IOTA, in contrast, was built solely for IoT applications and does not offer multi-currency payments.
COTI uses an algorithm known as the TrustChain™, whereas IOTA uses the Tangle algorithm. COTI fees are minimal and the COTI system rewards good behaviour with lower transaction fees. IOTA is free; however, there are likely to be disadvantages in the long term. There is currently no system in place to address network participants who demonstrate dishonest conduct and do not honor their obligations to other peers and merchants. COTI, on the other hand, offers buyer-seller protections through its Mediation System.
COTI is decentralised and can handle micro transactions. IOTA is not so decentralised, as it uses coordinators to confirm transactions. The scalability of COTI is 10,000 transactions per second (TPS), whereas the scalability of IOTA is 1,000 TPS. COTI is fully compliant with regulations in all countries and territories in which it operates. It is not clear whether IOTA is compliant with the regulations of all the territories where its services are offered. Both COTI and IOTA provide user-friendly interfaces and are easy to use by buyers and sellers.
