The short of it:

Download the tarball
Install libcurl4-openssl-dev
Extract tarball and install cpuminer
Run minerd

Honestly though, it's not worth it trying to CPU mine bitcoin (especially if you're trying to do it from a VPS).

write this in your bitcoin.conf at ~/.bitcoin/

gen=1

also you can check if it is cpu mining with ./bitcoind getgenerate

Ive looked on here and google, and i cant find any instructions on how to install a CPU miner on ubuntu 10.4. I only have shell access, so no gui. Thank you in advance.
