Thanks for the help. Yeah its too bad linux hasn't developed something along the lines of the APK, where everything can just be a package. I've had some real issues in the past trying to install things that were not in the built in "app store" in linux. Eventually I just gave up and went back to windows when I couldn't get what I needed to work. I think it would do them a lot of good to have some kind of universal thing that worked on all distros, like apk does for android. Tarballs and all that... I just wasn't feelin' it.

But if it will just be a mining rig, I think I can deal with it since I'll just be setting it up and letting it run, not using it for everyday stuff.

Is it like android where you can just get an apk installer program, and download apk's for linux? Or is that an android specific thing? I've had a few linux OS's in the past, but I only ever used the snyaptic package manager or whatever was built in.

No. APKs are specifically for Android, and won't work for Linux.

It depends on the program itself on Linux. Sometimes you have like a .deb file whereas you can install easily like on .exe files on Windows systems, but sometimes you have to use batch commands to install that certain program and other pre-requisites.

I'm not 100% sure, but I personally think that mining in Linux systems is better due to it being overall light-weight compared to Windows; though it might take time for you to get used to it as usually, installing programs in Linux is not as easy as installing programs on Windows.

And yes, most wallets and mining programs also support Linux.

Hi all. I was wondering what the pitfalls are of doing a linux crypto rig. For mining, but also maybe for having various wallets on the computer. Is it a pain, or generally pretty easy? Do most altcoins make a linux wallet, as well as a windows and mac wallet? Or are linux wallets kind of scarce? And what about mining? Is the software all there, or is that mainly windows/mac as well? Just looking to get a general idea.
