Some people just don't understand that Bitcoin's energy consumption isn't waste. How can keeping a network secure with several billions worth of transaction value per day be a waste of resources?
Oh. He's probably simply against PoW then.
I can kind of sympathize with their concerns. Mining using up the amount of energy that it does isn't a very ideal situation, and I do feel like we should be on the lookout for alternatives. The problem is that there's really none at the moment. Using something else at this point would compromise the security of the network and would likely create a rift within the community. We don't really have a choice but to live with PoW until the we can find an algorithm that can be agreed on. The energy consumption argument has been blown way out of proportion anyway -- I'm just saying we should be improving where we can.
Either way, waste is defined as:
Miners are profiting from their activities so what they're doing can't be considered wasteful. The proper term would probably be resource-intensive.
