Subscription sounds easier to implement. I'd go this direction.

I think that in this case a subscription model would be a lot better than issuing tokens to exchange for time.

It's definitely not guaranteed that an ICO would bring you that much more popularity, I mean your tool is also probably meant for a niche market.
You'll just disappear amongst all the other ICOs that are already out there.

You would also need to advertise your ICO to get enough funding, wouldn't it be better to spend that money on advertising your subscription based service?

I don't understand why you need to complicate things, you can go with the subscription route, if your program is good enough you will get positive reviews by giving out some review copies. After that you can use a service like bitpay or any other system to get the payments in. So instead of launching another ico go with the subscriptions.

How can you turn a software tool into a cryptocurrency? Is this possible?
I guess  you mean that people will buy tokens and spend them for using this software tool.
ICOs are very expensive and you will need a big budget to promote them.
Anyway, the best thing to do is to create the finished product or service, test it, and then decide what to do with payment models and promotion.
If this is going to be a software, the subscription model would be the right decision,i guess.

I am currently in the works of a software tool that will help you make more informed decisions with buying cryptocurrency with a wide range of tools.
It will also help you organize tokens much simpler.
It is centralized, it is a service in which you can for time to use it.

My question:
Should I turn it into a cryptocurrency and hold an ico?
This means people can buy and sell the token and than in exchange use that token for time

Should it be a subscription model?
Where people pay $100 a month to use.

My thoughts:

ICO:
Making it in token form the price per month would change every month if people are buying it month to month it could negatively affect them.
Large amount of funding and much more publicity could act as a catalyze for the project. Could explode in support and help with funding early on.
Not decentralized and isn't using block chain technology. Doesn't fit in with many other ico's and cryptocurrencies.
People will feel more emotionally attached if they believe it could make them money with coin price rising so support would be much higher.

Subscription:
Easier to keep track of and automatically pay each month.

Ps. I know it's vague but I'm not ready to publicize all the tools and ideas yet. Sorry about that.
