The problem is these social media platforms are not going to use external developers to interact with their systems, because it is going to compete with their own local technologies. So your coin might get banned on their platforms. 

The good thing is if you manage to develop something and they like it, then they might buy it or hire you to develop this further with the help of their local team.

What could be special with the social network you’re going to offer? Not to discourage you but a lot of social network platforms had came up already and were not successful. if you are planning of launching or offering another social network it should be something different from the leading ones right now and should contain some features the the leading networks do not posses to make a difference and catch the attention of users. I Totally agreed with your opinion but I will digress a little. Those platforms might be struggling at present as Bitcoin was not popular for many years before it is gaining massive adoption. Anything on blockchain should just continue eventhough they are struggling at present, the future belong to them and as long they can implement new ideas. Nothing just get adopted one day. With Facebook Libra and Brave Browser, this will create a big awareness and people will be looking on how to get rewards when they do things online.

If you are not rewarding people, then it will be very hard for your project to take-off. Unless it gain some notoriety or at least very unique. But as far as social media is concern, Facebook, Youtube has already set the bar high, so what idea do you have in mind that will make crypto enthusiast used your platform? 1. If you plan an ICO/IEO, do not put too high target, if I'm not mistaken that raised fund of ONZ achieved USD 1 million (softcap reached around that figure)
2. Plan a good advertising such as good bounty.
3. As joniboni said, generating token demands and user acquisition should be highly concerned inside your concept.
4. I've seen many projects trying to basically do the same thing. You add more problem here as you address a very specific user, which probably need or not need a new platform for their interactions. The problem here is the same as any other project, user acquisition, and token demand.

If you want to build something like this, you don't need your own tokens. Bitcoin or any other crypto should be good enough.

Me neither see a successful social network crypto, I add your example: ONZ.
I think this ONZ is similar with SPN in general. They launched in Q1 2018, listed in some exchanges but very low buyers and very low price which is almost not worthy.  

Another struggling social crypto: UHIVE
