Great tournament played by both. Van Gerwen seemed to be the towering favorite, beating significant players 5-0 and 6-0 respectively in his quarter-final and semi-final. Smit was on the verge of elimination against Schindler, but today he was definitely the better player. And especially that he has thrown a 9 darter is of course a great conclusion to the tournament. In that leg, van Gerwen also almost threw a 9 darter. And speaking of 9 darts, then Smith almost threw another one. And Smith is also the new number 1 in the world. That must be a dream start to the year.

Yes, it was really a great finale and a great game. The nine-darter was a really great performance and I think Michael Smith really deserved the win. Alongside Peter Wright, he was one of my favorites for this championship. I will remember this match for a long time, but it's a pity that the championship is already over.  Cry

The final has now started and the score is 1-1 in sets. It is an unprecedented high level so far. And a 9 darter has already fallen.
And it was one of greatest legs that I ever saw. Van Gerwen was just D12 away from making 9 darter himself, but he missed it and then Smith closed leg by making 9 darter himself.

i also saw the leg and it was probably the greatest of all time. in addition, yesterday was the first and also the last nine-darter at this pdc world championship.

And I think it was key moment in this match. It was great final, but after 9 darter Michael Smith looked more confident and solid.
Congratulations to Michael Smith for becoming 2023 World Champion!

The final has now started and the score is 1-1 in sets. It is an unprecedented high level so far. And a 9 darter has already fallen. I know there's a serious prize on that too if you roll it, I think a 50,000 GBP bonus. Quite a lot of money. They seem evenly matched at the moment, but van Gerwen seems totally unimpressed with his opponent's play. Also looked up some statistics. The last 3 times they played against each other, Smith managed to win all 3 games. So he has serious chances to become world champion tonight.

LTU_btc has already written everything about yesterday's semifinals. both finalists (which you can see below) had no trouble and won their duels easily.
now the final will be played today and MvG is my favorite for this year's pdc title.

Yesterday both semifinals weren't very exciting, both favorites got comfortable wins. Van Gerwen didn't let for Van Den Bergh to win even 1 set and won match 6:0.
Today is last day and final between Van Gerwen and Smith. In the final they will play until someone will win 7 sets. Van Gerwen is heavy favorite according to bookmakers and it's nothing surprising, considering how he is playing.

semi-finals have now started at the World Darts Championship. Smith to Clemens. Smith has the better of the game, but is also the current number 4 in the world rankings. Smith is currently leading 2-1 in sets, but I think they must have won 6 sets. So everything is still open. Clemens made the best impression of all the quarterfinals yesterday, but that's not much use if you lose now. I think Smith is going to win this game. You may not even be able to call van Gerwen's match a match. I think it will be a complete sweep, just like yesterday's match against Cris Dobey with no less than 5-0.

nobody would have thought that Gabriel Clemens could play such a good performance against Gerwyn Price and throw him out of the 'ally pally' with 1-5. this is the first time that GC enters a semi-final.

and in the semifinals anyone can beat anyone. good form on the day and at the same time a weaker form of the opponent and then its open until the last throw...

At the moment the number 1 in the world, Price, plays against the German Clemens. Clemens has taken a 2-1 lead in sets. Perhaps a bit surprising. Later in the evening we see the favorite for the title still in action, Michael van Gerwen. He then plays against Cris Dobey. The 2 games of the afternoon were not favorites games, but they were entertaining. Especially Clayton - van den Berg was very exciting and that match seemed to go both ways for a long time. Michael Smith is a player who is considered an outsider for the title, but then he will have to throw a lot better than today.
Wow, Price lost 5:1 to Clemens. From all 1/4 final games it's only that I didn't saw, so, I'm wondering what happened to Price. In other evening game Van Gerwen left no chance for Dobey and won match very easy 5:0 he had impressive average -102 points.
Smith - Bunting was great match to watch, even if quality of it wasn't good. Smith won without playing good. Bunting had much bigger averages, much more 180s, but still lost as he missed lot of doubles. Happy to see Van den Bergh reaching semis for the first time.
I don't know why you consider Smith as outsider for the title. He is big favorite in semifinal against Clemens, same like Van Gerwen against Van den Bergh. But potentially in the final, if Van Gerwen will play same like today, he is big favorite.

We had some fun matches yesterday. Today they can celebrate old and new in peace. Van gerwen made the most impression so far. The dream final would be Price - van gerwen. I honestly don't see which other players are capable of winning the final either. Michael Smith can be a tough hurdle, but he certainly isn't throwing his best year of his career. And also got away very well against Schindler. That is the only person who could beat Price and van Gerwen. Tomorrow in the afternoon 2 games will be played and then we will continue with 2 evening games in the evening. My tournament winner is van Gerwen.

From today, Alan Soutar made an upset by eliminating one of Top 10 players Danny Noppert. Noppert was leading 2:0, but Soutar managed to make impressive comeback. Jose de Sousa made even more unbeleavable comeback - after being down 0:3 he managed to win 4 sets in a row and win match.

not only these 2 duels were very interesting on day 11
Michael Smith fights back from 3-1 down to beat the german Martin Schindler and prove his world title credentials.
and before that there was the duel between Michael van Gerwen and austrian Mensur Suljovic. both dart players showed a strong performance but MvG delivered and won 4:2 to reach the last 16.

in fact Gerwyn Price had an easy game against Raymond van Barneveld but the big surprise came at the last evening game where the belgian Kim Huybrechts beat the reigning champion Peter Wright with a well deserved 4-1 win kick out of the ally pally.
That's probably biggest surprise in 2023 tournament. It was really difficult to recognize Wright on this match. Probably it can be related with fact that recent months weren't easy for him, as his wife had serious health issues.

At the moment, Price and van Barneveld have started their match. Price is the big favorite to win, but the whole room is a fan of van Barneveld. Nice detail is that price had become world champion when no audience was allowed to attend. Price was allowed to start the first leg and won it, it will be 1-1 in the 2nd leg. And this could also be a very long match. I think Price will win but it won't be easy.

We now have a break with these days. Tomorrow and Monday there will be no darts either, but they will start again on Tuesday. Some players fly up and down to their country to celebrate Christmas, and then come back on Monday night. And the most spectacular match we will see is Gerwin Price against Raymond van Barneveld. The number 1 in the world against a legend of darts. Michael van Gerwen threw the highest average ever in a tournament in his last match in the 2nd set. So it is really in absolute top form. Price is also good, but can be very hit and miss. And what also doesn't help Price is that he is absolutely not loved by the public because of his weird final match from 2 years ago that he managed to win. And we should never erase someone like Peter Wright.

In the match between Price and van Barneveld, Price is the favorite of the bookmakers. I have seen a quote of around 1.40 on various sites. Not surprising, if you are the number 1 in the world and play against someone who has actually shown nothing in the last 2 years and is now barely allowed to participate in the World Cup. The public is indeed in favor of van Barneveld, but would Price actually still be concerned about that? Look at all the tournaments that have been played in recent years, he has the public against him every game. I don't think he cares much anymore. But he really hasn't won many major tournaments in the last 2 years. It could well fall in the direction of van Barneveld.

Not a lot of surprises this year yet in the world championship but it can still come. Watched the match of Clayton play and he played pretty good and in the interview afterwards, he also mentioned that he thinks he can become world champion so it will be interesting to see how far he can get!

on day 9 Jonny Clayton, Rob Cross and Joe Cullen were among the eight seeds to make it safely through on the final day before the christmas break.
in the duel Joe Cullen vs Ricky Evans there nearly was finally a nine-darter from Joe Cullen who threw seven perfect darts but took 11 darts to get a great win over Ricky Evans.

and here you can see very well how the draw bracket before the christmas break. so far, only three seedings have fallen!

Is there an overview somewhere on the net of how many nine-darters have been thrown and by whom? Unfortunately I couldn't find any.  Smiley

i did some searching for you and found the following info:
Quote
There have been 401 nine-dart finishes in PDC history since 1999. 2021 saw 42 nine-dart finishes, while there have already been 16 nine-dart finishes in 2022. Only Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen have ever been able to hit two nine-darters in the same game. Van Gerwen’s last nine-darter came in the UK open in 2020. Gerwyn Price hit two nine-dart finishes on the same evening this season during Premier League Darts Night 3.

I also saw little-known names pass by for today's schedule. Perhaps Van Den Berg from Belgium was the most famous. I thought he would have a free lap in the 1st round because of his performance last year. But with the Order of Merit only the prize money of the last 2 counts?! year. Adrian Lewis is already out again. That was a big player about 10 years ago. He was always close to the favorite role to become champion and was actually in the small group of outsiders. I don't know what his pattern in life is like now, but he seems to have said goodbye to the darts world a bit this way. A resurrection of van Barneveld has made a big impression in the darts world.

So far, few surprise shutdowns have been seen. But that often happens in the first round. The tension will only start in round 3, because then you will see some players facing each other with the necessary status. For example, the draw shows that Price would sometimes face van Barneveld in the 3rd round. Certainly not a walk over for Price, who managed to lose no less than 2x to van Barneveld last month. Odds for the tournament victory are 3.50 for van Gerwen. So that is the real favorite for this tournament. However, it has been volatile in recent years.

Van Gerwen is no longer as good as he once was. Then he won 90% of all tournaments in which he participated. Only the last tournament he showed his absolute form at times. Too bad it came so late. A female contestant also participated, but she seemed to be eliminated quite quickly in the first round. So you can see that darts is really more of a men's sport, also at this world championship. Players like gary Anderson and Peter Right should also not be ignored from the tournament victory.

Van Gerwen has not even shown anything at all in recent years. You could attribute it to corona, but in the year before Corona it was not good either. And we're talking about 4 years ago already. He will certainly want revenge for last year, when he and a few compatriots were infected with Covid19 and were therefore not allowed to participate in the World Cup. It can go crazy. In the first few rounds I expect van Gerwen to come through. There are also players in the draw that I have never heard of. But the Order of Merit is not a normal ranking.

We are about to start again with the darts world championship. In the past, much more attention was paid to it in the run-up to this tournament. This is undoubtedly because the World Cup is still running parallel to this tournament. Nice to see that darts legend Raymond van Barneveld can participate in the tournament again, after he had already announced twice before that he wanted to stop. Van Gerwen is suddenly the top favorite with the bookmakers again, probably due to his last tournament victory 2 weeks ago. In it we saw his old level. I think the first rounds start tomorrow.

Thanks for making this topic, I'm already waiting for competition. This year it will be very good time to watch darts because there won't be any football at the same time - World Cup will end next week and if I'm not mistaken, club football will resume on Christmas.

the bookmakers see Michael van Gerwen as the biggest favorite in front. then follows the world champion of 2021, Gerwyn Price, the finalist of 2022, Michael Smith, and only then defending champion Peter Wright.
