I found that this is caused by contention with long-running searches. Search is disabled while I figure out how to fix it.

I may have fixed it. Search is enabled again.

Note that I reduced the maximum results from 1200 to 500 and increased the results per page to 100. Also, the 5-board restriction no longer exists.

I think you might have reduced the maximum results in the wrong direction? I use the forum search sometimes to see where I've been mentioned/a response to my post, which I just tried to do, however it showed results from 2016 to 2015, without anything from 2017, despite the setting for "Most recent topics first" turned on.

Please check it, thanks.

I guess 2 weeks back I couldn't access the website for almost an hour with this  Database 500 error. Search has stopped working since long (often get an error to select 5 boards at a time) and everytime I need to save my posts to avoid losing my content and then post it.

I haven't been seeing any errors. If you see repetitive errors (ie. errors occurring more than once in a while), post the exact times and full error messages.

I don't just make little software tweaks. The forum is backed by significant hardware power, and I do increase it as necessary. But you can't just throw hardware at these things.

I've been getting them a lot recently. Especially when moderating.

I'm getting this error frequently. Just received it several times within 5 minutes of posting this message

Yeah, this post didn't go through the first time either.

I think when you take more than 5 minutes to write whatever you are writing after hitting the submit it shows the database error, last week I got more than 5-6 errors but not anymore in a few days now.

This forum needs a proper bandwidth boost, and definitely not more tweaking of code. I don't see why there hasn't been any bandwidth allocated to allow this forum to cope with the overall increased usage and ddos attacks.

If there aren't any direct funds available to do so, isn't there a possibility to launch a combined community effort in form of donations to allow more bandwidth to be bought? I definitely would contribute on a monthly basis.

I am quite sure that there are enough other people willing to do the same. If it isn't for the people here, at least do it for the mods that can't do their moderation work properly due to all the errors and extremely slow loding pages.

I am getting that error a lot recently.  I hope it's something Theymos can fix by throwing more resources at it!
I just really hope theymos starts rolling out the new forum software some time soon, considering that there's already a public beta / demo of it. It's getting annoying trying to moderate with all these 504s and "Database Error"s popping up way more often than they should. And don't even get me started on the number of people that started dozens of identical threads because they thought their previous attempts didn't come through.

Are we having too much users that our platform can handle as of now? It really annoys me as well especially if i am also having a hard time with my network connection. Will the new platform also provides a higher bandwidth? cause if not then this error will still be popping out.

I got that particular error one time, and the last few times I've tried to post,
I get something that says the system is too busy or whatever.  Must be all
the shit posters that tend to ramp up their activity once the price of bitcoin
starts to soar.  Everybody is trying to earn money here and it clogs up the
servers.  That's my crap, non geek, technical explanation for this.  It's
annoying as hell, but it comes and goes.  Just be patient and deal with it.
This forum has issues that are far more serious than that...
