Hi. I have some questions about altcoins. I see alot of dead ICO's about certain coins, essentially hijacking the coins name without using it. These are generally threads from 2013/2014, What would happen/is it possible to reuse the name of these coins without getting myself into any trouble etc?

Hard to say. Someone just released a TORcoin even though there has been one before. They easily got added to exchanges, etc. However, there has been a lot of confusion and I don't think it's worth it. You can brainstorm a new name. Of course, it depends on the name you want to use. Did they even get added to an exchange? etc. Regardless, can't see why you would want to be associated with a coin that's already dead. There are a lot of opportunities out there to pick up a dead coin that has an active chain and no developer. If you want to reuse a name, why not just hijack a whole coin?

Hi OP , it is a big mistake to reuse the name of a past coin as every dead coin has already got a bad reputation and marked as a scammer.. How about brainstorming a new coin name?

Things to consider:

Consider the name of your coin by Googling it, must search for a unique one. Also  consider the domain name, much better to catch a ".COM" domain using your coin name.. "YourCoinNameHere.com". If you spot a good one. Secure the social medias, by registering the Twitter, Facebook urls

you can reuse the name as many time as you want, in fact there are many coins with the same name, cheack picoin, from 2014 and from 2017, what you need to do is change the ticker, the abbreviation of your coin, to something else, if you have like two picoin, the ticker can be pic or pc for example, and exchange will have no problem adding it
I personally wouldn't even bother using a name that already exists, you'd be setting yourself up for a lot of problems imo. Even if you're using the name of a dead coin and changing the ticker.
It isn't that hard to find a name that's unique.

Recognisability is pretty important and you'll definitely lose some of that when you're using a name that already exists.

Agree with that . There are tons of unique and attractive names out there . OP should also include the reason why you want to name an altcoin from a dead altcoin cause I don't see a reason why would you benefit from that . The only thing you can get from that is its past involvements especially if it has a bad image to people . I'm pretty sure people will ask if you have connection from that dead alt that might make them hesitate in supporting your project .
Maybe because the name is frequently used in media/is for example a well-known artificial -nonexisting internet figure, or person.

I think it can be problem if you don't know this fact that this coin exist. At least you must be ready for tons of questions. Do not worry 99% of all coins ar copy of Bitcoin and only diference is name  Grin. But if you want to create brand, name shoud be unique!

I don’t know why you will want to use the name of a failed coin, since that name will be associated with failure, it is better to start from scratch and create your own catchy name instead of using the name of a failed coin.
Well sometimes people just start an ICO claiming the name without even dev'ing the coin, which means a very good name just got thrown away..

You will get into trouble they might think that you are scamming again the second time if you are trying to revive dead coin, but if you want a relaunch certain coins from the past, you should state it in your announcement thread it's better to get a new name a new algo and your own roadmap to save you from all the troubles.

If the owner of that altcoin transfer to you the ownership of it you can reuse or relaunch it  but if you reusing with the same name you will encountered  some circumstances .
That is going to be a hassle if they were last online several months/years ago. Not sure how one would do such thing.. Are there any rules regarding this topic?
