Definitely keep the private keys but I also think there is value in keeping the .dat file.
In many cases there may not be an up to date snapshot available and you having the file might be useful for the revival of the chain.
Paying for a drive sucks but it depends how "conservative" you want to be about the risk.
This is a question we dealt with in our discussions for our project.
Disclaimer: I am running an ICO now that's sole purpose is to deal with this issue of deadcoins.
Have a look at what we're trying to do and any feedback is much appreciated!

Don't completely remove any of your (even dead) coins even you if you do not want regret about that.
You should know history about the man who threw away hard disk drive with 7500 bitcoins in 2013 and now he extremely regrets about that.

Because of that I always backup my wallets at least once a month. You will never know many people are saying with coins being revived or resurrected. Hopefully my deadcoins will also arise from the dead one day and make me filthy rich, just kidding.

It is not advisable to delete the entire coin's wallet and private key of the assumed dead coin. If possible, save the private key and just delete the wallet. Who knows, dead coin today could resurrect tomorrow. Don't take that chance of saying 'had I known...'

What do most of you do with old / dead coins and their blockchains that you have downloaded? Save the wallet.dat on a USB drive, keep the entire blockchain too just in case, or just delete it and move on?

I have a 2TB drive full of what are now and I can only assume are going to be in the future dead coin blockchanins. But, that voice in the back of my head says "you never know" you might have someone revive that coin and those 500,000 bongodrum coins might be worth BTC0.00000001 each one day.

I'm doing some cleanup of my storage PC and just can't make myself hit the delete button.
I am thinking of getting an 2TB external USB and putting it on a shelf but that means spending money for a drive, which seems silly.

What does everyone else do? Am I just a hoarder?

This is what I do.
1. on coin wallet, go to the console and do "dumpprivkey [address]"
2. Save the address and privatekeycode generated on an encrypted file.
3. Delete wallet.dat
4. In the future, when the coin arises from the dead, download the wallet again. then "importprivkey [privkeycode]"

If you believed there is some community on that coins, then it might be possible to revive the coin with remaking the coins.
If you feel that coins really dead with no community, then you should have delete it.

its a dead coin already just delete whole blockchain and just save the wallet.dat just in case. You don't do much of that coins anyway. delete and move on Smiley
