I have a feeling that over the last 100 years in the West, particularly in the USA, there has been a continuous decline in the efficiency of government.
You could be right or wrong but instead of having this as a felling, why not venture of research to get your feelings satisfied with facts? Perhaps this is a whole decade you are referring to here.

At the end of the 19th century, the United States began to suspect that the growth of monopolies was threatening the political stability of the country, and some oligarchs were forced to break up their economic empires into several smaller parts (the first precedent was the breaking up of Rockefeller's Standard Oil into about 7 companies).
That was was really when the system of an efficient government began to fall apart where politically, there came several political and geographical regions with allocations of authorities taking advantage of them through the revenues and natural resources as allocations between the selfish governing system.

The USA government is doing exactly what they fought against in late 1700s. Taxes on everything. We work and get taxed by the government and the state, then anything we buy is taxed. Plus we pay to register our cars every year, pay taxes on land we own every single year, just bleeding us dry.

And don't yout think it is an expected thing to happen to any country which still has such a big public debt and needs to continue to issue debt in order for the government to continue to function? In the way I see it, the country can have either a responsible ruler who cares about the future of their people and tries to reduce debt, but one of the only ways to do that is through taxation, the alternative would be a uncaring leader who would not think ahead and would cut taxes on the people who already have much money, like Trump did, increasing the national debt even further. Obviously, nobody likes excessive taxation, but one must find and equilibrium between relieving the deficit and the tax rates, so people do not feel they're being abused by the state.

Guberment doesnt give a fuck about anyone only how much tax they can extract from you and how many votes they can get from you to keep them in power where they can pay themselves big dollars and leave with big golden handshakes and pensions and then go to work for the vested interests they worked hard for and then lobby hard for the same vested interests to the next guberment. Politicans like most people are greedy fuckers that squander tax dollars on shit and help corrupt business get no bid contracts. Some parts than can be bought in walmart for a few cents are priced 10000x to the taxpayer by these corrupt companies so you are getting a fraction of the services and infrastructure you really should be getting while corrupt fuckers siphon off all the tax dollars. Its the same the world over. Politicans are lying thieving scum bankrupting countries on behalf of their real bosses who will buy up all the public infrastructure and assets for cents on the dollar when the shitshow collapses and the debt bubble bursts Grin

It would not be the first time I have read allegations of the power of the United States to be in decline and the ability to sustain their political model to be also in some kind of slow motion crisis. If that is true then it would be explain why the quality of the the recent presidents of the country seems to have decreased  through time. Trump is not the cause of the problems/issues the United States has, he is rather consequence of all of it. People has grown aware of the existence of the American Establishment and and important percentage of people do not like to vote for establishment politicians anymore.
When comes to Russia/China/NK, it is not only about counter the dominance of the USA in the West, those regimes have much to do with one another and they are together for the sake of the continuation of anti-democracy. If more people realized it, then the USA would be stronger and would care to protect their political model in the long term.

At the end of the 19th century, the United States began to suspect that the growth of monopolies was threatening the political stability of the country, and some oligarchs were forced to break up their economic empires into several smaller parts (the first precedent was the breaking up of Rockefeller's Standard Oil into about 7 companies). Now I believe that if this step had not taken place, the fascists would have come to power in the United States in the 1930s.
Now, I believe, one can give an example of inefficiency - investments of Western companies into China, which the government either could not or did not want to fight. Everything is according to the Lenin’s phrase - “we will buy from the capitalists a rope with which we will hang them”. As far as I can see, currently the China is maintaining the regimes in North Korea and Russia which threaten the West with nukes (without the Chinese support these regimes would quickly fall).
And here is the second comparison. In the 1930s, the US government, in order to overcome the Great Depression, confiscated gold from the population. I heard the point of view that now the US government would not be able to repeat this - the population would not allow this now, because their trust in the authorities has greatly decreased.

Here is an article in Medium which explains the reasons of all this:
