I think better idea is to prohibit all hydrocarbon-powered cars (gasoline, diesel, LPG, CNG) from large cities after some date (e.g. 2030). Automotive companies will know they must develop good and cheap electric cars or go bankrupt after this date. Urging them to be "green" is foolish, they will always find the ways how to cheat (look at recent Volkswagen trick).

They may have cheated, but they are paying for it.
Heads are rolling, plus Volksagen has had to stop selling some variants in a few countries.
They don't get away scot free.  Smiley

This would have not just the banks, but the auto companies up in arms as well.

But would it really work?
In the end, money is fungible.
Let us say, I pay $10K to get my house remodelled from my pocket and take a $10K auto loan.
If I am not allowed to take an auto loan, I would pay $10k from my pocket to buy the car and will take a loan of $10K to get my house remodelled.

Well i`m sure if you ask for a specific loan, you are only allowed to spend it for that particular thing. You cannot get a house loan out, and spend it in the casino.

Sure, what I am saying is if you have the money to do one of 2 things - buy a house or a casino, you can spend your own money to buy the casino and take a loan to buy a house. It is no different from using your own money to buy a house and taking a loan to buy a casino.

It's of the highest interest for oil companies to lobby against innovations in renewable energy technology.
The world needs better public transport, better connected cities. And above all, cleaner energy sources.

Like it or not these are how way things go. You borrow more money but you will end up paying higher for the item due to the interest rate. In a way you enslave yourself to work and pay off the loans. That's how the system works

Yes it is true. Every one knows about the high interest rate charges but still go and buy these cars and some people go for high end cars to show their status in the public. System is designed to provide a convenience to he people and ask them to pay for the convenience. I feel we should blame people than the system, if we don't go and buy then what system can do?

People still are to blame for getting cars they cannot afford in the first place. I chose to get rid of my car and commute by bicycle years ago. Unfortunately it is more socially acceptable for an adult to their own car so people will continue to drive.

You do not want to kill car loans at this moment, its the same reason home loans are still widely available, they create jobs.
Its not just the car salesman that suffers when there are less cars for sale. The guy that builds them suffers, all the parts builders suffer, oil producers suffer, which means less oil field jobs. This also means people hold on to their cars longer and we all have seen how much better the new cars run compared to a car even 5 years ago.
So you actually are pushing global warming well killing jobs,is this the stance you are wanting to push?

Not to go to off on a tangent but you did bring it up soo...How convinced are you that global warming is not a natural cycle of the earth? We have had a ice age,so why is it so hard to think we could swing the opposite direction! If you really believe in this cause you need to look into creating work for those that will be losing jobs or you will always have a stiff competition coming from those that want to keep making money.
