Without this open threat what was the ETA on the fix? And what would be the expected fall out if someone performed the attack without announcing it beforehand?

Keep in mind that Namecoin is pretty much flopping as to its intended purpose and we might as well just call it a sort of Bitcoin testnet.  As a DNS registrar, it is a joke and it will never succeed as such.  The vast majority of entries in the database are cybersquatters who think they're going to get rich off the name "sony.bit" and "microsoft.bit" when the world suddenly demands this system.  They don't get that the world isn't asking for a new DNS system, it's fairly happy with the one it already has.
Maybe YOU are happy with it.  Maybe the world was happy with fax before it found email.  You exaggerate the news of cryptocurrency DNS's death.

One marketing angle for Namecoin is HTTPS security.  We've had two CA exploits this year, and no small site or browser implementer likes the near-monopoly.  I've thought of writing up the potential for better-than-EV secure websites, but I paused when I considered the money invested in the status quo and what 0.1% of that money could do to an underdeveloped block chain.

My long-term to-do list:
  • Write open-source DNS specifications and software supporting Namecoin conventions.
  • Nag my ISP to use it.
  • Patch open-source HTTPS clients (browsers) to trust .bit "fingerprint" records even more than Extended Validation certificates. (Perhaps show a green bar with flowers and butterflies?)
  • Persuade their maintainers to apply the patches.

Davinci did notice something interesting around the time the attack was "called off" someone put in a rather large buy order for NMC on the cheap... :-D

see that is one of the many problems with allowing him to stay here with impunity.  WHen others see the kind of shit that goes on here and no one does shit about it, they wont want shit to do with BTC.

Douche or not, the way I see it, he DID help namecoin and bitcoin.  I actually still hope he attacks Namecoin.  Namecoin's development is stagnant and that's problematic.

I already know that my Namecoins are going to be safe, because any successful attack will be quickly followed by some sort of update that restores and reverts the original chain the way it was.  And any success will result in added strength for bitcoin.  BitcoinExpress, please attack!

The underground world of Tor, however, doesn't have a satisfactory DNS system.  What really needs a decentralized cryptographic naming registry is the hidden service feature of Tor and others, so that there can be a silkroad.onion instead of a meaningless asd;flkajsdf;lkajsdf.onion.  Until development effort goes toward making Namecoin a widely accepted naming system of these networks, and go where the actual demand is, Namecoin is no different than ixcoin or testnet.  Might as well attack it for research.

LOL anyoen else think douchebagexpress is bipolar? OR do you think he is getting scared of legal issues?
His reasons for what he is doing changes more often than his diapers.

First he wanted to create an "lethal alt chain killer" and namecoin was the first target.  Then he really just wanted to help bitcoin. Now he really just wanted to help the people at namecoin, because they didnt fix his zero day exploit before he went saying he was going to attack namecoin.. which was hours after he came up with his zero day exploit.

SERIOUSLY YOU HAVE TO BE A MORON TO BELIEVE A THING HE SAYS. HE MEANT THIS MALICIOUSLY. HE FUCKED OVER DOZENS OF BUSINESSES. HE SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO SPREAD HIS DOUCHENESSS ALL OVER THE FORUMS.

DOUCHEBAGEXPRESS will claim I am upset over my 300 solidcoins, I COULDNT GIVE A SHIT AND I WOULD CALL HIM OUT IF HE DID THIS TO NO ONE ELSE BUT NAMECOIN AND I DONT OWN ANY NAMECOINS. I WOULD CALL HIM OUT IF HE DID THIS TO IXCOIN which right now is still mostly dead. THE GUY IS BEING A MEGA DOUCHE AND DESERVES TO BE CALLED OUT. PM him and let him know how you feel, with him butt fucking the entire community, including many long time supporters of the bitcoin community. LIKE doubleC.

How do you think ruxum feels having to close down it;s exchanges? How do you think Ruxum feels knowing this community doesnt ban peopel who shit on it.

(ruxum and doublec Probably have the strongest cases against douchebagExpress and REALLY should look into legal help)

*bolding cause douchebagExpress Seems to like bolding now

I'll have to agree. Plus he's likely imagining things:

The leadership of Namecoin has allowed it to stagnate into the weak state it was in. They own this and should take responsibility.

In the past 72 hours I have seen a coming together of people that produced more in this time than in the past four months combined. There has been a bigger collaboration between Bitcoin and Namecoin than anytime in recent memory. The chain is more secure now, with a better future than it was before this started.

EDIT: The fact that we are aware of the attack means we can circumvent it with ease. It would be very interesting if BitcoinEXpress changed the tactics to catch the chain off-guard. I somehow doubt that though. But all-in-all I have to admit that the community got a little momentum because of this threat, we probably need to thank BitcoinEXpress for that. Smiley

Which chain exactly?

The one that he's purposely killing because his cult of personality failed on these forums?

Or the one (that probably don't exist at all) that he refuses to launch and deflects every challenge like a pre-pubescent middle schooler?

There's too many to keep track of.

Read:  Viper was right it was all a War of the Worlds hoax, sure was fun causing all that ruckus.  P.S.  I couldn't really pull it off anyway, especially now that I scared you into forking your own chain and implementing merged mining early.  P.P.S.  DoubleC can I pretty please have my GG exchange now?

Someone has to buy all those Geforce2MX coins he mined?

To The Namecoin Community,

I have accomplished what I needed to do and attacking Namecoin at this point would only be for the malicious destruction of a viable alt-currency. Destruction is not what I was after. Namecoin's leadership was the real target here, not the miners, not the exchanges or the many registered domains.

The leadership of Namecoin has allowed it to stagnate into the weak state it was in. They own this and should take responsibility.

I am sorry it took these drastic measures to get people's attention, but it wasn't until I had demonstrated lethality did anyone take me serious, again, The Namecoin Attack starting on block 19101 has been called off.

Namecoin should make Davinci an Honorary Ambassador and spokesman. My decision to withdraw is due in no small part to Davinci.

Peace
BCX

So this was for all of namecoin supporters' benefit?

Great...
