(1) Assume that a well-respected member (again, let the example be ckolivas) decides to remove his account.

Then he must be prepared to deal with the consequences of that decision. It's not the board's problem.

Well he doesn't have any consequences.  Every user who is fooled into thinking it is the "same" ckolivas is the one who suffers the consequence.

People associate usernames with certain individuals, not with user_id or date_registered values.
With your approach however, the implication that a username translates into any particular person is false.

How can I tell that eg. ArtForz is actually the same individual who I think he is?
I'd need to check the Date Registered value. Good luck expecting anyone to go through so much trouble.

I already provided an example, let's elaborate on it:
(1) Assume that a well-respected member (again, let the example be ckolivas) decides to remove his account.
(2) A malicious user reuses the freed username.
(3) Other forum users are unaware that their PMs and donations are targeted at the correct account name but the wrong person.

If you still don't see the point, fine. Do account management the 1990s way if you so please.

Not being able to be reused is what I meant by locking it out. And if they want their account deleted I don't see why they would care if someone else wants to use the name, and if they don't care I don't see why anyone else would.

I never postulated that the account stay locked out.
Remove it on demand but dirty the username (that username is then kept in another table of the database) so it cannot be re-used by someone else.
Easy enough and safer because a quitting user's account cannot be as easily impersonated (wait until someone well-respected, like ckolivas, removes his account and grab the username thus freed).

If the account is deleted, yes they would be.

Sorry, I need a bit of time to recuperate... is that confirmed info?
Is there a reason for not doing server-side account management the right way?
This sounds so 1995 it's not even funny.

Why should a username stay locked out if someone wants their account deleted?

i don't get why Emos on forums ask for account deletion: period- if you don't like the forum ur a part of then just ignore it and stop posting. it seems more like people wanting attention since it makes NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL if the account was deleted or not unless your a scammer

What's the point? It's not as if user names are reusable?

I say keep the account, just make sure it's locked.
Change the email to an non-existent email so it can't be recovered.

I was looking for a way to delete my account, does an admin have to do it?
I've stopped using BTC and I don't need my account anymore..
If anybody knows what I need to do can they let me know?
