if you want to create and draw graphs in order to visualize connections, i can recommend graph-tool as library. i only used it from within python but it is a c++ library and very performant and feature-rich. another popular network library in python which is written in c++ is igraph, also having R bindings.

I think this will help you out https://github.com/blockchain and why would you just do it for fun? There are some developers that are doing it because it's their passion and try to help out the community. I advise you to do some research and that link I gave will be helpful to you.
