I've heard good things about Jabber, and I believe Telegram made a desktop app as well
Read a lot of good things about pidgin not getting into the encryption till I set up my next computer. Something tells me I am rolling in viruses and spying programs with all the porn watching I do. Will have to break this habit with the new computer.
irc, hexchat has an encryption option
