I've heard good things about Jabber, and I believe Telegram made a desktop app as well

Read a lot of good things about pidgin not getting into the encryption till I set up my next computer. Something tells me I am rolling in viruses and spying programs with all the porn watching I do. Will have to break this habit with the new computer.

What is the best desktop (and Mac) messager app offering end to end encryption and which does not require a cell phone number to register an account?

I mean apps like Telegram or Signal.
