Bad news for my gpu guys Sad i think it was affected as well because everywhere i try to connect nothing happen.....i go today at the warranty and now i`m waiting few days their answer.....hope then can solve it and i have nothing to pay......."
Me too i stop everything maybe in 2 second but....still damage Sad
I also have a bad psu i think when i start the psu get more power than normal and that is why....Is no name psu http://i67.tinypic.com/bffm91.jpg
I am soooo angry and sad...i just start mining maybe from 1 month and something and got already problemm

1070 asus strix gpu..

oh, 1st rule of anything mining. evga power supplies are your friend.. i dont think id use anything else.. maybe corsair, ive heard good things about them never had one.. my seasonic melted the cords i wouldnt buy another one.. i do have a rosewill lightning 1300.. its a beast..
On one rig i have good psu crosair and on another Super Flower Leadex Titanium, 80+ Titanium, 1000W, PFC Activ 95% efficiency.
And for this i just want to make new rig because i have 2 gpu`s left and that is why i put that shit psu....until i make some money to buy another good psu...but it was my fault....i hope they will fix my gpu...

Well if you tell them you used a riser wrong they may tell you that you are not covered.
If you tell them my mobo does not see the card and nothing else you maybe covered.

I don't encourage you to tell them the truth or to omit some of the truth.  your choice.

As to what can be shorted.  when you do this.

psu
mobo pcie slot
riser
gpu.

In my btc gpu days of 2012 and 2013 I shorted 1 card with an improper pcie cable

In the spring of 2016 to nov 2017.

Of 50 mobos and 200 plus gpus.

2 bad mobos  not my fault just bad.
1 mobo I pulled the pcie slot right out my fault.
1 mob I shorted my fault
1 dead cpu not my fault the only cpu I ever killed in a build an intel i7 6700k
3 risers
3 dead psus
the dead asus rx 480.

and may be more like 65 mobos
50 cpus
250 cards

so no ram ever failed
no ssd  failed
no hdd failed
no usb stick failed.

1 gpu I killed
2 gpu's I sold died I got them replaced for the buyers.
1 mobo I sold I could not get them a replacement
2 psu's I sold I got replacements.
1 gpu a sapphire died and I could not get it rma'd

I think 100000 usd in gear has gone in and out of my house since April 2016.  the gpu mining gear has under 5% fail rate with most getting replaced.

I don't buy sapphire cards anymore they have very strict rma rules.
30 risers I don't use many of them

Have you tried to mine with it as a secondary card? With the monitor connected to another graphic card! Sometimes they give no signal but if detected by the driver they can still mine.
I put  the gpu on another rig and i connect on the rig with team view and nothing happen i wait a lot maybe the gpu shows but ......nothing.Now i send the card to the warranty i just wait their response on next week....i have to buy good psu now..until i get it back....

i just did this today Sad

i wasn't paying attention and put the little card backwards.. and smoked it..

thing is, i turned it around and its still working.. did not seem to get the cards..
i guess it depends on the riser boards? really there should be no power running through the pcie on the motherboard to the riser.. thats why you connect the riser to molex.. there should be diode to keep the power going only to the gpu.

it seems by putting the card in backwards you ground out the boards pcie power.. unfortunately without a riser i don't think the board will work anymore as i smoked the pcie port.. :/

The very first PCI-E connections before the notch do carry 12V and 3.3V (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#Form_factors).

thankfully when you plug the little card in backwards it doesnt hit the 12v connection.. as its the small end not the large end.. it looks like whatever TDO is that is what hit that with voltage?

also on my little card.. the first 11 pins.. the large side.. the only channels that are connected are ground #4 and maybe #7 and #11. the rest are just there to hold the card in.
the only lines connected to the usb are 12 to 18. altho not all of those make connection.. as i burned out #16 and mine still works..

altho..a different pin burned out on mine as the OP pin 16.. and that pin is ground.. as i put a multimeter on it.
here is what mine looked like, like i said i just put it in the right way and it seems to be ok.

The same thing happened to me when i just started mining. I didn't even know what happened because I clicked on the power switch again thinking it was ok. It made itself very clear when i heard a loud pop and the burnt smell of death of PSU death started. On the brighter side tho, my GPU was unaffected and it has been error free for 4 months now. Good luck to OP!

well. I have to make a confession. I did it as well one time! burned the riser this way. I was lucky, I think, that the riser was the only thing I burned.
maybe cause I shut-off everything immediately once I saw the smoke or maybe that was my power supply which cut the power..

turns out that mainboard and vga cards were ok and working 2 month already after that. So I hope, pfft , your card will all right!
my cards are ok, i dunno about the OP..
it was quick.. i hit the power button, saw a flash of light and some smoke and everything shut off.. the psu might have saved everything..

I did what he did.

Mobo survived.

Riser burnt.

And card died.  An asus strix rx480 8gb

It is the only card to die on me in the last 19 months of mining

Hi, could you please explain more what you and he did so that I can avoid doing it in the future? Thanks.

Sure  the riser  uses a usb wire to a pcie adapter the pcie adapter can be inserted into the pcie slot wrong and boom  short

Best case scenario I think is that you only killed the PCI-E slot on the motherboard in which you plugged that riser in backwards, along with the riser.

But I don't think the card is damaged.

I can't understand what you actually did but I don't think this affected your gpu card.
Anyway, there is only one way to find out.

If you don't have another riser lying around, attach that card directly to the mobo through the x16 slot.
Connect its power cable and make sure that there's nothing lose and power up the rig.

Hopefully the fans will start spinning and the pc will detect it. If you haven't worked on the graphic drivers, download the latest drivers for your card.

Keep us updated.
As you can see in this photo : http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=o6zj1l&s=9#.WefDTjBRWUk  like this i put the riser in mobo and that is why i burn it...because he need add in mobo inverse...
I buy new riser for tomorrow...the fans starts i try on another rig and nothing detect....like nothing connect ....i will try tomorrow directly in pc and check if it`s working... Sad
I hope i don`t burn my gpu... Sad(
