Sure .... But the formula it is just to give you an idea!!!
Not the exact time of block generation. Remember.... To find a block you need to be lucky tooo.

I wondered if someone could answer a basic question for me..regarding difficulty

I have observed some coins that introduce blocks into the block chain and advertised intervals regarding of difficulty - case in point 42 coin - a new block is generated every 42 seconds.

on the other hand I see a coin like Goldcoin which advertises 120 second block times but at the current time it's only generating blocks at about 5 to 6 minute intervals - is this because of the current difficulty? and if so - how can a person calculate the number of blocks that will be introduced into the block chain based on 'current' difficulty if difficulty does indeed affect the rate at which blocks are introduced int he block chain.

is there a standard mathematical formula that can be used?

thanks in advance.

i think you can not do this calculation with a formula... 42sec is averaging... but not exactly...
hmm the average was still a formula last time I checked... (and probability also is governed by formulas...)
