Not according to the police. To the police high power usage means you must be growing pot and they can get a warrant on that basis alone. Buy cold pills and starter fluid in the same month you are looking at a visit by the police too. We don't live in a free country anymore. Its a police state. Anyone that doesn't see it is naive.
in the uk a spike in usage will trigger someone in a hi-viz vest turning up unannouced with a heat reading camera at your property. the energy companies are compelled by laww to highlight these spikes . if the local police decide to kick down your door looking for weed and find your overclocked asics, good lucking trying to get any comp for your downtime. your average plod is, lets face facts, thick as sh1t

I have limited funds but electricity is included in my rent. All things considered, what's the cheapest reasonable way that I can get into mining?

Buy one of those big rigs!  but becareful as your electrical usage will attract the authorities ad they think you're growing weed.

lots of electricity usage means growing weed? wat?

no, it means lots of electricity usage.

(another ed: hmm.  i wonder if there will be lots of 'clearance' deals on radeons here soon)

I think there's going to be a LOT of used Radeon cards on ebay in the next few months.

it can use 400-450 watts if you overclock it

for bitcoin mining, you can get close to 300mhash on a 7790  for about 70 watts

unsure what the current prices are, but newegg used to have this sapphire 7790 on rebate for $110 over and over.  also a powercolor for $115.  after you sold the games, it'd be around $85 and $90 respectively (they were worth more back then, like a month ago).

now, obv this requires some of your time and effort (10 minutes to do all the crap for the rebate and maybe 10 minutes to list the gaming codes on ebay and another 5 minutes of BSing with the person that buys em?)...   but throwing that aside, you could just not even open the box for that card and sell it as 'brand new' on ebay and make about a 20% profit after fees (assuming you have a shop or w/e).

or you could mine with it for a month or two then sell it.  not sure which way is better.  i chose the mining route, but my elec is 6.8c

It's worth keeping your laptop useful

Agreed, but I have an extra - as well as another that just needs a pwr suppply. but haha doesn't matter anyway as judging from what I've read sofar it appears that it's not worth it using a laptop. heck, I'm no longer even sure it's worth it using a desktop.

If you're going to mine on a laptop you pretty much agree you won't be using it.

Lmao, good luck burning out your ac adapter or funding pcie power

Most mining grade cards won't even run without an external power supply hooked up to the PCI-E power connectors. Just connect any regular old PSU. no big deal.

Don't bother, you won't make any money mining at this point. GPU mining is dead and you missed out on the ASICs.

You can't GPU mine on a laptop.

Just get one of these.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HWTOOLS-PM2-V2-1-PCI-E-Mini-PCI-E-adapter-Extend-you-Laptop-to-Anywhere-/170990045076?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cfcd0794

Put it in the mini-PCI slot of your laptop, and connect a riser to your full-size pci-e card.

No problemo.

What if I turn all the lights off and keep them off, will that compensate for it? Or I could buy a gerbil and put it in a treadmill attached to a small generator. Would that help?

Gerbil will do as much for you once even more asics are out.  If you are serious add it up.  Take difficulty going up 15-25ish percent each change.  Starting once you receive cards.  Take into account Ebay fees if you decide to sell.

Its a gamble but if you enjoy it.... there are worst ways to spend cash.

no a 7950 is just 200 watt per hour
watt = power. There's no such thing as "watt per hour". There's only (kilo)watt hour, which measures energy.
i mean 0.2kw of course which is equal to 200 watt

No a gpu uses 0.350 kwh
No, it uses 0.35 kilowatts. Per day, it uses 8.4 kilowatt hours. And that's only for 1 GPU. You'll have to account for other GPUs, supporting hardware, and inefficiency.

I think you are correct zvs. From my research it appears that it can still be profitable mining btc, and especially litecoin - since you can trade that for btc.

icebear888, I 'm inclined to believe you are correct about not using laptops. The only way I see that as being a reasonable use is if you had an espensive and asic. Certainly not something that someone lacking funds would do....

Followup: I have a desktop and two laptops. What would I want to use in my laptops? And should I use my laptops at all? or vice-versa? Also please consider that I don't want to run the electricity use up too much and end up getting my rent raised.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

The laptop will do you no good...

Ok I get it. Even with *Free Electricity, it's not worth it unless I have significant money to invest. Sigh, well... that sucks. Sad

*It's not really free, it's included in my rent. But it's "technically" unlimited. Although a significant/unusually high or excessive amount of use would eventually get noticed and then as any reasonable business person or entity would do - they would make changes to cover this expense or to stop it from happening. Get it?

Thanks everyone for your help. I guess I'll just wait for people to find out that my online business accepts btc and that's how I will get some. Man, I wish there was better/more effective/more organized and faster/more convenient ways to let the btc community know that my online business accepts btc. Sigh again...

no, those ppl replying are just all foolish

go to slickdeals and wait for a 7770, 7790, or possibly a 7850 to appear

buy one of those, mine on it for a bit, then sell it on ebay for profits after redeeming your rebate and selling the included games

Laptop is useless for mining.  Wouldn't want to run one 24 hours even if was usb miners personally.

Gpu.... your kinda at a point where its a guess.  If you do it now with asics will take a long time if you ever do have a ROI. Will there be a possibility of litecoin? Maybe but ultimatly no one knows, and if it is more profitable then BTC then most likely will have tons of gpus flooding to do it.

Ultimatly if you want to do BTC at this point it is asic you want.

I think you're right, but some did suggest that I get a graphics card. So how sure are you of this? It wouldn't be worth it to mine either btc or litecoin using a graphics card in my desktop AND by perhaps joining a pool?

Hey I'm just trying to quickly determine if this is worth pursuing at all.

thanks again!
