I think the tournament will not take place at all. It is foreseeable that the new highly contagious virus mutations will spread quickly. Even in Japan, more and more votes are being voiced to cancel the Olympic Games. If there was a bet on whether the Euro Championship would take place, I would currently bet on no.
Question about Olympic Games is still open, but I'm confident that Euro 2020 will happen. All national leagues are in play, Champions league too, even tournanents like Nations league are being played. I don't see how Euro is different from it.
And maybe there will be spectators in stadiums. As we saw last summer, spread of virus wasn't such big as we have now. Also, in June, some part of population will be vaccinated already.
So, I don't see how Euro can be cancelled.

Just heard on TV that this tournament will not be played in 12 different countries as initially planned ages ago. It's not yet decided how the new format looks, we are waiting for a statement from UEFA.

I think they will cut it down to 3 cities, where two groups will play all their games. In one of these cities the playoffs will take place as well. Or everything will be played at Baku right from the start Wink

12 different countries during pandemic times doesn't looks like a good idea. Especially if UEFA are planning to held tournament with spectators in the stadiums.
Cut it down to 3 cities probably is better thing, but such intensive calendar can be harmful for stadium pitch, unless they will use multiple stadiums in same city.
And I doubt that EURO will happen in Baku this year Smiley. If I'm not mistaken, UEFA doesn't allow to play international games in Azerbaijan after conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Considering what is currently happening, especially in Italy, UEFA made the only logical thing. The EURO is not just about football. It's a celebration. It's about culture and about meeting people. Nobody feels like celebrating now. Almost 3.000 infected in Italy in the last 24 hours. Among them, Blaise Matuidi, French International from Juventus. Almost 350 died today.

EURO 2020 officially postponed until Summer 2021 - actually the only logical decision that could be taken if you ask me. As a side note: Copa America also postponed...

At least some good news for me: I don't have to mourn in summer that my country didn't qualify and can postpone it until the new year... Wink
^ I was very surprised, why they were too panicked, why they had to postpone all matches, each team still be able to play without spectators and locking the stadium tightly if they were worried about the crowd.

Too bad, but not that bad. I think we will see the domestic leagues, CL and EL deep into June and the summer will be packed with all kind of other sports and the Olympics possibly. The best thing though is, getting rid of that stupid Nations League for the foreseeable future.

It's now just about surviving the next weeks without any sports. After that, good grief, we will have sports all around the clock.

There's already a Euro 2020 thread... that's started from the qualifying. Can we keep the discussions to like that one thread so we don't make more threads for more of those spammers like Naida_BR (I can't believe I already have his name imprinted on my brain!).

The thread you mentioned is unfortunately not self-moderated and I don't like to scroll through 20 shitposts to find a valuable one Wink So I will keep this thread (open) for more serious, non-spammy discussions by deleting all spam and everyone, who is interested in such conversations, can feel free to contribute here. I consider the other thread for those users you mentioned and if I am only talking to myself in here, so be it Grin

This board needs some overhaul anyway, because the amount of shitposts is just unbearable. So I think it's fine to have two seperate threads for the same event - one for spam posts and one for more quality-oriented posts. Unless the mods decide to go a different route of course and only allow one thread per event Wink If the good posters, and there is quite a lot of them in the gambling section, are able to discuss their passion in a non-spammy environment, that is already a win in my book. There is still hope for the gambling board to not have the same fate as the Altcoin boards.

Crazy shit going on, hard times for us sports freaks but in the end, whats most important is preventing a pandemic and I agree that millions of fans travelling all over Europe would not seem the best idea these days.

Only 1 little merit for such a nice thread? Gotta change that...

Those Playoff games will surely be postponed until further notice and now some journalist on german TV said, that UEFA will announce on Tuesday, that the Euro 2020 will be held in 2021 with all locations etc. staying the same. For Champions League there will most likely be some kind of Top8 tournament, where the teams meet in some city (he was talking about Istanbul Huh) and fight out the winner in knockout format during one week. Same will then go for Europa League maybe.

The Italian newspaper "Tuttosport" reported, that the EURO 2020 might be postponed one year to 2021 due the Covid-19 pandemic. The German newspaper "Bild" is also reporting on the matter. Due to the massive cancellation of games in Italy and other countries, national league schedules continue to extend into the summer. According to Tuttosport, the period for the EURO 2020 is getting shorter and shorter.

Horrible news for the European football, but in my opinion this might be necessary to prevent an even bigger Covid-19 outbreak in Europe. Millions of fans traveling through Europe are certainly not the best strategy to prevent a pandemic. Let's see how this case develops, maybe there is some hope, but I am pretty sure that things will get worse first, before they get better..

But with the current coronavirus scene, the highest probability is for the coronavirus to cancel the event.
That is very unlikely to happen. There is still time and probably a cure will be found. Apparently Israel is experimenting with a cure they discovered by share luck.
Worst case scenario would be that they change a host nation if the situation is out of control although FIFA President Infantino did mention that he wouldn't rule out canceling the entire event. That is just talk and I can't remember a single big tournament where it wasn't speculated that stadiums will not be built in time, there are corruption scandals, the weather is not in their favor, etc.

I think the new format look much like a Euro championship. EURO has always been exciting and the results mostly unpredictable. Most of the results has always surprised us.
England and France would surely be the favorites for the tournament. But with the current coronavirus scene, the highest probability is for the coronavirus to cancel the event.

No clue why England got a 5.5, but I guess its because the semi-finals and the final are in London?

Yes, they have home advantage for these games, but they first have to get there Grin In fact they have home advantage in all games apart from a possible quarterfinal, where they would have to travel St. Petersburg/Munich/Rome/Baku.

The odds are low, and yes, I do think they are too low as well, because there is a lot of betting people in England and they form the majority in Betfair exchange, where the market is made.
You can witness this in every major football tournament, where England is participating. The english punters will just bet on England no matter what. So bookmakers will offer very low odds for England all the time, since they know, that their english customers would more or less play any odds for England and that will give the bookie some nice value.

Edit: In fact England doesn't have home advantage in R16 too.

LOL! Hahahaha, yes and I am regularly watching our greatest EURO 2004 moments, never forget, you know! Cheesy Yes, we do love Otto! Cheesy Just check out this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZDHLltOeVc

Haha, nice video! Always nice to see such emotions. They did it, they took the once in a lifetime chance and won it!

And yes, we actually love football and you know what - we destroyed Bosnia and Finland in the last qualifying rounds after having replaced the manager! I would go as far and say some of Greece´s best performances in the last decade. And thats why this is so disappointing, its not like teams such as Finland are any better than us, to be exact, they are worse. ^^

Oh I didn't know that, looks like you got at least 2 1/2 years now to prepare the team for the next major tournement then. Maybe the new manager can form a good squad which is able to (at least) make it into the tournement. It can't get worse than it's now anyway. And you are right, Greece should be able to beat teams like Finland or Bosnia.

Oh what a good idea to open a discussion and betting thread tyKiwanuka. I am really excited for the EURO 2020 and it's nice that we can already start a little discussion. The current odds look pretty fair in my opinion. No clue why England got a 5.5, but I guess its because the semi-finals and the final are in London?

Overall I am very excited for the event and surely will place many bets. During the last major tournement I came out with a slight profit, let's see how it goes this year.

Still cant believe how we (Greece) did NOT qualify and another lame summer with a huge football tournament without me cheering. :/ Not even reaching the playoffs, what a joke really.

Do people even take football serious in Greece? Did you guys ever win a major trophy? Oh yea,.. wait the EURO 2004. Are you guys still loving Otto Rehhagel Cheesy?

The Playoffs

Some teams still have to earn their spot in the Euro 2020.
The remaining four teams will be decided in knockout games and there are four paths. The semifinals will be played on March 26th, the finals on March 31st.

Path A

SF1: Iceland - Romania
SF2: Bulgaria - Hungary

Final: Winner SF1 - Winner SF2

Path B

SF1: Bosnia and Herzegovina - Northern Ireland
SF2: Slovakia - Ireland

Final: Winner SF1 - Winner SF2

Path C

SF1: Scotland - Israel
SF2: Norway - Serbia

Final: Winner SF1 - Winner SF2

Path D

SF1: Georgia - Belarus
SF2: North Macedonia - Kosovo

Final: Winner SF1 - Winner SF2

The Odds
As of Februar 26th 2020, taken from Sportsbet.io.

That path D is looking really pathetic Roll Eyes In the other paths there are some interesting teams and matches. Keeping my fingers crossed for Iceland, Ireland, Scotland and Kosovo. If Iceland fails to qualify, then I would like to see Romania or Hungary to advance, since there is matches played in Bucharest and Budapest and it's always good to have the "home teams" involved.

The Format

The 2020 UEFA European Football Championship will be held from June 11th to July 11th 2021.
This years edition will feature a new format, where not one (or two) country will be the host, but the matches will be spread among 12 cities in Europe and Asia.

A total of 24 teams will be present at this tournament, divided into six groups.
The group stage will be followed by the knockout phase with round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and the big final, where the new European Football Champion will be crowned then.

For the TBD teams, please see the second post in this thread.

The Odds
As of February 26th 2020, taken from Bet365.

I am not a big fan of this new format, but lets see. The fact that there will be matches played in countries that didn't qualify is kind of weird and I fear that some Euro-vibes will be missing because of that. The European Championships were always a very colourful event, where football fans from all over Europe would meet and celebrate together. Now everything is spread over the whole continent and the fans have to travel a lot and can't just stay for maybe a 4-week vacation in the same country, mixing it up with watching some football in the stadiums.

Group F is of course the most competitive one, will be interesting to see which teams will be able to advance to knockout phase from that group. Group D looks interesting and if Scotland is able to win their playoffs, they will join that group - should be fun then.

I made this thread self-moderated. I don't plan to delete a lot of posts, but rather let a fruitful discussion unfold. If it gets too spammy, I will delete posts though. So just stay on topic, share your thoughts, discuss the teams, odds, matches and don't spam useless stuff.
