You do not have to upgrade, but it is always a good idea to do so.
In general, you will pay less fees with recent wallet formats.

If you encounter a bug, though, please upgrade, before you request support.

For developers, there is nothing more irritating than users who are complaining about bugs that have been fixed a year ago.
It feels like being said: "I don't give a shit about your work".

thanks for your reply Thomas, i mostly meant this as my cold storage, it is a bit more work to upgrade it and a bit stressful sometimes. and since i rarely use the cold storage i'd rather postpone upgrading as long as possible.

but yeah i see what you maen, i always search if i encounter a bug to see if there was a solution, then i make the back-ups and then upgrade,... and then ask if it wasn't still fixed.

You can see the release notes here:

If there are bug fixes or new features that you want then it's a good idea to upgrade.

in any cases, unless you've made some specifics changes in the sofware or its running environment, you have the best  to get the latest public release, much more easy for the heping team (for free) to help you   Wink

Upgrading is generally a good ideas as the new releases contain bug fixes and new features. Some of the bugs fixed may be minor but other times critical bugs are fixed as well. It is generally a good idea to run the latest stable version, but you can always review the changelogs to see if it is critical to update or if you can wait a bit.

Crypto Swap Exchange
Depends. For some versions, it may be a mandatory update.

For example, in the earlier version, the client can generate a high s value transaction which is rejected by the nodes. Hence, you would need to update the client to be able to send the Bitcoins. Newer versions can have features such as Opt-in RBF option. I would recommend you to look at the changelog/release note and decide whether you want to upgrade.

I would upgrade no matter what.

as the title says.
i want to know, each time Electrum releases a new version such as 2.6, ..., 2.7, ..., 2.7.3, ..., 2.7.15 , and so on do i have to upgrade to the newer version or can i keep on using my old version.

i will upgrade from 1.9.x to 2.0 and 2.x to 3.0 obviously but i mean all in the middle.
