This isn't a stupid question. The guy didn't know how much heat the CPU actually produced when not in heavy use.

Anyways, yes you will still need a fan and heatsink. It doesn't have to be a good one. This is because although the CPU is not being heavily used, it still is on, and as long as it is on, it will continue to produce heat, just not a lot. Enough to burn the CPU if left without a heatsink for too long.

Sorry to be curt, but it sounded like a joke. Nearly every processor since the original Pentium has required a heatsink.

Ah, thank you, sorry for the stupid question.

This is my first custom build, and my CPU did not come with a heatsink, which is why I ask.

Without a heatsink capable of removing the heat generated by the CPU you will hit the thermal limit of that CPU very quickly and the PC will initiate a thermal shutdown.  The last CPU I purchased for mining, Intel Celeron (ivy bridge) even came with a heatsink and fan already assembled with thermal paste on the heatsink waiting to be applied to the CPU.

You will definitely need a heatsink regardless of cpu usage.

Will I need a heatsink and/or fan for my mining rig? There will be no CPU mining. It is an open case rig, with a box fan. I plan on running some form of linux, probably Lubuntu or Xubuntu.

My initial reaction is no, but what does BitcoinTalk think?
