A password I never set is blocking me from accessing my money. Instead of resetting it, gate.io said "fuck you".
https://imgur.com/a/f5Tfgwp
When you go to the link to reset the password, it tells you that you need Google Authenticator. When you go to set Google Authenticator, it says you need the funds password. It the loop of fraud
According to the screenshot, they actually already responded to your issue. They never said "fuck". They even said that you can ask more if you still have further problems. Have you contacted them again? I'm sure, the only thing you can do now is to keep contacting them. It looks like they are handing your issue, you don't feel so worried as long as they still want reply your message. I assume they only want to ensure that you're the real owner of the funds. That's why the mechanism is quite complicated.

Yeah, a common practice of getting things straight by ensuring who the user is, just keep pushing, but don't be rude (if possible), OP, people in support do their job on their part  Grin

Op looks very stressed with what he is facing, it looks like the exchange is very complicated in handling this but users must understand that the exchange must take good care of their users' funds that's why when users experience problems with passwords or pins to access their assets then the exchange will be very careful which sometimes takes more time than when handling account passwords because usually the exchange will ask us to create two passwords, the first is to enter the account second to access our assets.

This is just an isolated case and the OP is just exaggerating things on his post. Ofc an exchange support can’t immediately accept a fund password request to change or else a scammer can do this easily when they phished someone account.
It's quite true. Account recovery process is not here to help hackers more easily to hack accounts and get access to fund of their victims.

Quote
Best thing to do is to do KYC and proved ownership before he can demand with this kind of reset from the team if ever the reset function on his end is not working
It's quite true too. Years ago, before the more popularity of mandatory KYC on cryptocurrency exchanges (CEX I mean), if you lose your 2FA, for example, and you request to recover your account and 2FA, you will have to do KYC. Like a self-fie with a date of your account recovery request. When the exchange team receive it, they will verify it, before giving you access to your account, to reset password and 2FA.

Do not put your money into gate.io unless you want to get robbed.

Topic would be best appreciated at the scam accusations board than trading discussion board here. Although I have the app on my phone and I had signed up then but never used it to trade, I wanted to use it before p2p trade was restricted from my country and only few exchange offering p2p. Usually I have known gate.io to be a good exchange but I don't know about their reputation if they have soiled it so quickly or had scammed people. However, as already suggested you need some valid evidence to prove your claims about gate.io.

This is just an isolated case and the OP is just exaggerating things on his post. Ofc an exchange support can’t immediately accept a fund password request to change or else a scammer can do this easily when they phished someone account.

It’s impossible for the OP to never set a fund password since it requires full verification such as email, 2fa and whatever security set on his account just to set that password.

Best thing to do is to do KYC and proved ownership before he can demand with this kind of reset from the team if ever the reset function on his end is not working

I don't think that you are saying the truth @OP, long time ago I created a gate.io account and I only used it once or twice (if am not mistaken) but after I say your thread I tried to login and check but unfortunately for me, I have forgot my password, so I tried to reset it and it did not take me up to 10 to 15 minutes to change my password from old one to new one.
So what @stadus said is correct, you should provide an evidence to back up your suspicion about gate.io

Interesting. Thanks for checking on your end.

Did you setup a 2FA beforehand? as this appears to be another factor in the loop according from op.
I did not use a 2FA to lock my gate.io account because I have only used it ones or twice, so the account was inactive all these while untill yesterday I managed to login. Although I forgot my password but I reset it and it didn't take much of my time.
Just after I got the notification of your quote, I hurried to check again but fortunately for me they didn't ask for password this time.

Changing the fund password or login password does not make much difference, the only difference is that if we change the fund password, withdrawals will be temporarily locked for 24 hours to ensure our safety.

I also have an unused account on Gate and I also tried changing the password but no problem, everything went pretty smoothly, unlike what OP said.

OP did not provide accurate and complete information so it is difficult to know what problem he is having and whose fault it is. I'm not defending Gate just because I have an account or centralized exchanges, but I agree with some of the comments that Gate is clearly doing well so far.

Some members have made some accusations about Gate but that is not enough evidence to confirm that they have a problem. Because if we try to search about Binance, coinbase...top exchanges there will also be articles accusing them. I think this could be a few isolated cases or just unhealthy competition between exchanges.

I have never used gate.io before, but I have heard about this exchange platform for a long time and I can say that the service they offer is quite reliable and safe. I don't know how your case is since you didn't specify it clearly, but I don't think gate.io is at fault at all, since what you did was there is a procedure for forgetting passwords, and it shouldn't be a problem. Try contacting their representative and explain your problem.

To be fair I wasn't using it neither, but just because some forum member said so, I will not stop using it if I were using it. I am pretty sure there must be something else going on there, and not this simple situation but I believe we are going to see them have a different approach in the end as well, we will not be seeing this be this simple.

I am aware of the fact that some people will lose their money for making a stupid mistake and blame everyone aside from themselves, or even if they do blame it on themselves, they will not tell it to public and keep blaming others. I am sure gate had a good reason to do this, not sure what happened entirely but I am sure they did, because OP doesn't even give proof or explains anything.
I am suspicious about this too, the OP did not really brought forward a lot of evidence to support their case, which could mean that they are hiding something and there is more to this story that they are not telling us, like breaking the TOS of this exchange in some way or form and this is causing the support to not be very cooperative on their stance, since even if this exchange seems to have some issues, it is still one that has been around for longer than a decade.

Can I confirm if you're talking about the fund password in your post? from my understanding, op was referring to this. It does seem like you were talking about the password for logging in so had to double check.

I have not used the exchange before but my friends that has used the exchange before now have not had any issues with the exchange but despite the fact that they have not, I don't trust some exchange because they could just used some of their hidden terms and policy to withhold customers funds.
Hidden terms? Gee, that's crazy but I think only shady platforms are the ones who can do that. For those who are legit one, they must all be transparent but there are only users who can disregard the terms and policy, and worse is they still blame the platform for their own mistakes. Gate.io is I think a centralized exchange and even if we say that they are legit, we must only be careful because just like the saying said in crypto > 'not your keys, not your coins'

Gate.io is one of the oldest exchange sites here in crypto. I don't even remember now if I have an account there or not but I'm sure what the OP is saying is not true because Gate seems a serious and legit exchange, and even if let say they aren't, I never saw a scam site that will say 'fuck you' even if we already got caught by them. Even them can still show some respect.

The OP must only be a hater of this exchange or they also own an exchange, or he was only being hired to post something like this. If not, he maybe did an abuse and got his account locked. It's not the first time for me to see a post like that anyway but from time to time, there are always posts like this, though they are mostly found in the gambling section of our forum.

You should know how centralized exchanges work. Not only Gate.io but all other centralized exchanges like Binance, Bybit, kucoin ask for Identity verification whenever they want. You agreed to their TOS when you signed up and you have provided your identity information already. So, I don't see the reason why you are not going to verify that it's you who is going to access the account.

The moment you put your money on a centralized exchange, you are out of control and you have to rely on the exchange. This is the reason it is recommended not to hold your funds on exchanges. You should you nun a custodial wallet to hold funds. But since you are already a verified centralized exchange user, you should do the verification again to access your funds and then stop using them.

I have only used Gate.io when a website was using their payment processor, Gate Pay, and it was a poor experience. My payment was delayed and when I tried to get support it redirected me to a Chinese language page followed by a popup message saying I am in a restricted country and can’t use their service. Because their exchange blocks certain countries, it is impossible to get help when there are issues with Gate Pay which does not have those restrictions.

have you really tried reaching out to their customer support though? I don't think they will just lock the owner out of their asset and just decide to deny request for verification again.

personally I don't really use this exchange that much, not really a fan of their UI that's why I decided to stick with the other, but however if they truly did just like what OP said, deliberately making things difficult, it could be a warning for other people who put asset there.

hope things can be solved, but I just gonna be more cautious on using this exchange I guess, seeing the testimony above.

When you go to the link to reset the password, it tells you that you need Google Authenticator. When you go to set Google Authenticator, it says you need the funds password. It the loop of fraud

That sucks but they should still provide you a way to get your funds out.. perhaps a reverification or something. If the website support is unresponsive, try to escalate your case in their discord server or post in their subreddit. However do make sure you know how to weed out scammers pretending to be gate.io because there are way too many of them, sadly.

Why did you use gate.io its known scam exchange they keep freeze people account. They have very strict rules even you didnt break any of them your account will be frozen.
While I do not personally use their service, I have heard a lot of negative things about them for the past five years. Trustpilot even suggests that you stop using them.
Gate.io has been using AML to scam people since 2018. According to what I remember even those who mined altcoins were scammed. I don't know if those people who post above use gate.io but I'm telling you to stop using them its known exchange that keeps customers funds frozen.
Gate.io is one of old exchanges but I didn't use them recent years and honestly I did not know about their scam.

From your post, I am curious and want to find more information on their scams.

Recommendations at the end of this post.

Caveat: This is a well crafted, extensive list of all major exchanges dealing in Monero. If you can not find your go to exchange on this list treat it as "extremely high risk" and a potential scam. This list gets updated as new information becomes available. At the end you will find some recommendations for exchanges and wallets.

USE CUSTODIAL CEX AKA "CRYPTOBANKS" WITH EXTREME CAUTION
Only day traders should use these third parties for their trading stack and ideally withdraw after closing a position. Newcomers should make themselves comfortable with hardware wallets before buying on a CEX and always and immediately withdraw, what they bought.

They do that to pay their rent. They spend your money. Then they freeze enough accounts to cover for it. You get your money when the bitcoin price rises again.

In a nutshell, this is why all of the exchanges freeze accounts.

Thanks for the heads up. I will be more diligent.

Next time don't forget to use the search button you'll surprise that you are not the only one who experience the same thing.
As of right now, I only trade using Bitget Exchange and Binance. I had a terrible experience with OKX in the past, so if you decide to use them, proceed with caution. The minimum deposit amount in Bitcoin is 50k Sat but if you send less than that not even a single Sat it won't never be credited to your account.

How will an exchange send you “fuck you”? I don’t think that’s possible, even if they discover that you're a scammer or you're into anything illegal activities, then they won’t send that kind of message. It’s just better you explain how everything happens, but the response that you received from them, no exchange will send that kind of message, or it’s just better you show evidence of the response that you got and what really happened. You can’t just come here and accuse an exchange of scamming you without showing any evidence, it doesn’t make sense.

This doesn't help anyone here unless you provide some evidence and take your post seriously.

It's normal for an exchange to allow users to reset their passwords if they forget it, and Gate.io should have that feature. From what I've read, this exchange also offers 2FA--something you should definitely use to boost your account’s security.

Submitting an ID usually isn’t necessary unless it’s for KYC purposes, which wouldn't be the focus here since the main issue is simply accessing your account.

Was your password protected with 2FA before? If so, then you just need to provide the 2FA code so you can proceed in resetting your password. I use AUTHY myself, and I’m not sure if it’s exactly like Google Authenticator, but I can access my 2FA account through a password-protected app. That’s usually the only information the exchange needs to verify your account. So, try to comply with their requests first by remembering the password of your 2FA app to get the code needed, and don't rush into thinking they are a scam.

Although I don’t stand for them or advice anyone to actually put their money on any centralized exchange but I think the real Gat.io site would never actually have said that. They usually send your password to your email and then disabled the withdrawal from that wallet for 24 hours. So it is definitely a scam gate.io site you’re storing your funds on. But this doesn’t actually even mean they don’t some items sucks in their services, they are very fond of releasing coins without liquidity on the site and when you buy you can’t sell so even the real site shouldn’t be trusted.

In fact it is not your keys not your coins no matter the exchange

Although many of us don’t really like using centralized exchanges, and for many reasons like the situation you are facing right now, where you could have explained the full story and what’s happening instead of being that upset and angry without searching for a solution. For this thing, you might not remember if you set a withdrawal password I also have been in a similar situation long time ago with gate.io. Feeling upset and helpless didn’t solve anything especially I had funds stuck on my account because I forgot my withdrawal PIN or password so I contacted their support, put in some effort, and eventually I was able to reset that password. After waiting about 48 hours, I could withdraw my funds.
Gate.io is a large platform and they wouldn’t risk scamming users or losing the majority of their clients since they profit from every single user. My advice is to keep reaching out to their support until you get a solution, and don’t give up especially if you have significant funds inside.

Also, remember that losing your private keys elsewhere means losing your assets permanently. Always be careful to store and remember your passwords, and keep in mind that centralized systems can sometimes be just as secure as decentralized wallets or exchanges.

Oh. Are you trying to change your withdrawal password? Can you tell me if your 2FA code is correct? Or do you not even have 2FA code?

I also use Gate and I just checked and saw they not only require 2FA code from Authenticator app but also require code from email as well as SMS. If you have all that information, you will be able to change or reset your withdrawal password easily. And  in this case, if you lost 2FA code I recommend you to contact support via email and ask them to disable 2FA feature before you can reset your withdrawal password . It's not as complicated and difficult as you say, you must have missed something.

Did you try this?

Instead of resetting it, gate.io said "fuck you".
I am sure they did not say it.

Do not put your money into gate.io unless you want to get robbed.
You have same risk with any centralized exchange.
Reminder: do not keep your money in online accounts

I have never been a fan of Gate exchange from day 1, I had my verification rejected couple of times and I just abandoned them and never looked back again but your situation isn't clear, if you can share a screenshot, people can explain better about the situation. Another question is what do you mean by reseting password? Did you send a forgot password and didn't receive notifications on your email, if you do, you will definitely get an email notification.

What if you use the wrong website? Have you thought about been on the wrong website probably a clone website where you must have submitted your details and when yiu try to reset your password, it's programmed to return an f word, I'm very sure that definitely wouldn't be gate exchange, even if you offended them or probably has done something that violate their terms and conditions, you wouldn't be getting that reply again. So check again, I mean the real website.

When you go to the link to reset the password, it tells you that you need Google Authenticator. When you go to set Google Authenticator, it says you need the funds password. It the loop of fraud

I think you should send some photos of your claim. I doubt gate will message you exactly how you described the message to you. Its not like a known exchange would send you a mean message like that.

Also are you sure you are on the right website maybe its a scam one and just impersonating gate website.

It's a flat password error.

Sad to see a platform putting such shit to your face as a user, but the we may like to see prove of what you mentioned, such as a screenshot of the reply you get when you contacted them and also how it all ended between you guys.

Again do you have a kyc verification of any kind on the account,
