I am one of the guy who is still holding alts and happy with its value because I am in profit interms of fiat atleast, but I am also sure that when bitcoin surge will be over all alts will try to gain its all time bitcoin highs which will pull more profit for me. I am also buying few alts with high marketcap right now with my bitcoin at current low prices.

So today I'm focused on gains in Bitcoin, but I have some altcoins that lost their value due to Bitcoin's overvaluation, but I'm not upset about it because they have gone up with the dollar values as well.
I always predict to win in Bitcoin with the trades than in dollars, with this appreciation of Bitcoin or trades I'm doing more, I'm waiting for my altcoins to increase the value to start making trade again, I hope that happens soon.
The way is to wait to see where the values of Bitcoin and Altcoins will stop, but remembering that whenever you profit is good.

many coins have reached dollar highs recently, but none have gotten anywhere near their bitcoin highs.

i can imagine just as many people are pissed off at their alt falling against bitcoin in the last few months as others are happy at the current dollar gains but to get those bitcoin gains you'd have to be a double trading god to sell the alt at the right time.

where do you stand on this?

You got me here. I will say though, that some of my earlier alt holdings were simply there because I accepted payments for work from projects that could not or would not pay in Bitcoin, so I suppose I've realised quite a bit of gains in terms of percentage this year. I believe, at the recent ATHs from the smattering of coins I got in 2016, close to a thousand dollars, which isn't terribly small in my book.

Admittedly, when I went on a diversification spree mid-year, I probably bought alts as much on research as on guesswork, based loosely around market cap and recognition. None of these holdings have resulted in even break-even BTC values as of today! Of the ICO tokens, one I liquidated at BTC profit, and two I hold have appreciated in fiat value but less than 25% of the Bitcoin price I invested with.

So yeah, disappointed to say the least, but a lot of lessons learnt and still glad most of my holdings were in Bitcoin.

Being happy over the dollars gains isn't really a thing that happens to me a lot apart when bitcoin makes huge jumps in value and amaze the people of it's scaling ability ! So i don't really consider that as a win that i should get excited over because i know that the more coins produced the more that overall market cap is going to be divided on more coins the less a coin will be worth . So i don't really get happy on something that'll change in value in no time at all !

What i do really get happy over is whenever i make good trades or get more bitcoins than i anticipated when i started my initial investment and that makes me feel great ! And even tho bitcoin's value is estimated in dollars so people could make the analogy , i really don't do that because my inner self sees that a bitcoin is worth 100k dollars , not 15k or 16k Wink .

so it looks like bitcoin for the win so far.

for me i have a decent amount in a couple of alts. i also figured out early on that i'd never be able to time this stuff properly so it's separate in my mind. i want to keep my bitcoin for the future and use the alts to cash out if i need some fiat. because of that i think pure dollar with them.

In trading I am looking on price of altcoin versus btc because it's btc that I am using as primary currency in buying alts so I need a positive volume percentage in btc before selling because if not even though I already in profit looking on usd price of the alt I buy compare to the current price still loss because I should also be in profit if just keep my bitcoins.

Unless I am making an investment simply to spread my money and diversify I am always interested in bitcoin gains instead of altcoin gains. I want to grow my bitcoin or I might as well just be a hodler.
