It depends on what exposure you want.

If you invest in one alt-coin e.g., you might completely lose out on a bull run if that particular coin gets left behind. On the other hand, buying every single coin in top 100 e.g. will give you something similar to a crypto-fund catching the general appreciation of the crypto market - but not when one coin outcompetes another.

Generally I think it's a good idea to try and mitigate some risk when possible, already quite risky to invest in crypto

If you want to diversify to something more stable, the way is traditional investments (gold, silver, stock market...), as someone already said. But you may not be able to get the same profits.

If you want to increase your profit potential, you can diversify a small percentage of your portfolio investing in coins with real innovation and potential to reach mass adoption, even better when these are things built from scratch. I think DAG coins, like Bytes and Blackbytes, will do great in the long term.

With most alts, there is no intrinsic value, so you make your money catching pumps, where you accumulate some cheap coins, wait for a pump and then cash out. Most coins on Poloniex and Bittrex end up getting pumped at some point. The trick is to not fall in love with your coin and think it is a bitcoin killer, and cash out when you have made your profit.

BTC to the moon is inevitable...
diversification is a good thing but you should diversify your money into solid investments. use bitcoin plus stocks, gold,.... or things you find valuable investments. don't just focus 100% on cryptocurrency markets. that's my approach anyways.

and as far as altcoins go i am not a fan of investing in many of them. i tend to have only a handful to be able to watch them more closely. they can give you good profit but their profitability time is often short.
during bitcoin bull runs the bitcoin market may attract most of the attention and money anyways so altcoins may not be able to get the same attention.
