unless you are from the following countries[1] you can apply for KYC.
Gate.io start requiring KYC for Deposit on Feb/2021 ---> https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--5315063

Are they scammers? There are not enough claims to confirm this.
Will they ask for KYC verification? Yes, at some point, KYC verification will be requested, so even if you use the site for several times and KYC not requested, it will be requested sooner or later.

what should I do? Try to avoid them if you don't want to complete KYC.
What if the currency I want to buy/sell is only listed only on gate.io? Avoid it.

!Citizens and residents of Washington State(U.S.A), New York State(U.S.A), Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria,Pakistan, the Government of Venezuela, and Crimea are not supported. centralized and decentralized methods.

Anyone with experience with gate.io
I am personally not using it as I don't care for alts,  but couple of my IRL friends are using Gate.io (since they have bunch if altcoins listed there that can't be found on Coinbase /Binance/FTX) for quite some time and so far they had no issue whatsoever. And yeah, they also had to go through KYC in order to withdraw the funds, so its pretty much standard practice when it comes to Gate.io.

Then again, sending your data/or your crypto  to a centrlaized exchange is always a risk.

I am not a user of the site but according to Trustpilot, check the rating:

TrustPilot is an awful place to check if something is legit or not. Bunch of paid reviews there so you can't believe absolutely anything you read, whether its good or bad.

It is mandatory if that's what you're asking...

...Gate.io makes it mandatory that all users obtain KYC ID Verification. Only after your account has obtained KYC ID verification, can you withdraw funds, use credit cards or debit cards to buy cryptocurrencies and to participate in Startup projects.

but gate.io has made it somewhat ambiguous so I can't say I don't see where you're coming from.

See how they have this pls kyc notice

and a full bar withdrawal limit on my unverified test account

As long as you're using centralized exchanges, that's a common thing if they'll ask your KYC anytime and with any reason... if you're using decentralized exchanges and they ask you KYC, obviously it's not common Tongue

This exchanges doesn't have a good reputations since there're some valid complaints.
Gate.io scam
Scam gate.io exchange

So if you not deposit large amount money, it's better let it alone and use decentralized exchanges (doesn't need to fill KYC) e.g. Bisq, hodl hodl.

Is this scam or anything?

I'm sure they are not a scam. I use them back in the IEO days. Unfortunately, it's what the exchanges do now, they ask KYC. Gate.io ranks in the top 8th of the exchange list https://coinmarketcap.com/rankings/exchanges/

That should make them more legit than the others. Obviously, there are exchanges above so why go to gate.io when you are still going to be submitting KYC too you might just stay to where you have once submitted your KYC data. Makes you safer.

No experience with them but based on this rankings: https://coinmarketcap.com/rankings/exchanges/

It's on top 8.

In that case, you can't do anything there if you're being asked for kyc for the withdrawal. How much you've deposited there? Looks like a big amount of money.

No option for you but to comply and then don't ever use them again if you hate the process.

No gate.io is not a scam. I sometimes use this exchange to trade the coins which are not available on binance or other big exchanges. I never had any problem with their withdrawal but i have done my KYC on that exchange.

Do you have any problem in doing KYC ? Just do the KYC and you can do continue working on that exchange. Alternatively, just withdraw your amount after completing KYC.

If there is a better choice, it would he best to just not use gate.io. I have several friends that have had bad experiences with this exchange. Although I haven't checked it myself, I don't want to bother anyway when there are better choices out there, I only see it as a last resort when I want to trade some altcoin that doesn't exist in other exchanges. Otherwise, no thanks. Kyc is too bothersome for me. Although I am not that concerned with privacy, I'd rather not spread personal information if not that necessary. I don't even like social media.

You can read this:

About Identity Verification KYC Procedures

1. Why should you get your account identity verified?
You are required to verifying your identity at Gate.io by going through our KYC process.
Once your account is verified, you can ask to raise withdrawal limit for a specific coin if the current limit cannot satisfy your need.
With a verified account, your can also enjoy a faster and more smooth deposit and withdrawal experience.
Getting your account verified is also an important step to enhance security of your account.

2. Is Identity Verification (KYC) mandatory for deposit ?
You can deposit while preparing for Identity verification, but please make sure you have finished it before withdrawing.
As we may manual review some withdrawals flagged as suspicious ones by our risk management mechanism (“KYC Required”status in your withdrawal ), an advanced identity verification (KYC2) will be required as well. In that case, you may go to https://www.gate.io/myaccount/id_setup2 on our website to finish it..

So, it depends, a centralized exchange can at any point due to one reason or the other request for KYC.
