I believe power can change people and make them act differently. When someone gets lots of this power and starts prioritizing their personal interests instead of the wellness of others, it's said to have a negative impact on the individual.
Most times, power can make people forget the first reason for their position and their promises to others. Making them more arrogant, controlling, and manipulative toward others. Absolutely, it can also have positive effects on people. Give individuals the ability to make positive changes, influence others in a better way,and also create meaningful impact in their communities.
Power can bring out the worst in an individual and also the positive, but it all depends on the individual and how it's been used. But all in all, it's best you put the interests of the people ahead.

when a government has too much political power, then it is worthy of being called a regime, for example this has happened in russia where a president has too much political power and he is able to change the constitution according to his wishes and is able to organize the military for his interests. some said that "if it is the will of the people to want him to remain president, then so be it". however, too much power is actually poison and it can make a president dictatorial and iron-fisted, who will do various things to get away with being president for life.
There is a saying that absolute power corrupts absolutely. The extent to which power can and will corrupt an individual is different from what its effect will be in another. This is as a result of personality differences, exposure, background etc. A selfish person will use power for personal gains and self interest. All over the world, we have seen and read about people whose entire personality had a swift change when they tasted power and everything it comes with. I think that to answer this question, we have to personalize it by pondering on what we will do if given power. Are we going to let it take over our humanity?, Is it going to be an avenue of oppression?, etc.

Let me use your reference point as an example, Nelson Mandela was good whether in power or not he fought racial segregation in South Africa got arrested for 27 years and was even given power but despite all this he didn't abuse his office or misuse the power given to him, so power don't change people but rather brings out their true behaviour.

Take instance of an arm rubber it's not the gun it's carry that rubbed people, but the person carrying the gun has already settled it's action in the heart just that the gun only give more motivation to it's concluded mindset .
We should be aware of this kind of people so we don't vote them into power and end up complaining that they are doing something that is not reasonable or attacking the citizens. Anyhow we ought to do it, we should always make sure we get the right people into power.

A lot of people appear to be kind before going into power but once they are given the power to rule or govern they will become opposite of what they are before, several people have been seen like that nad on this ground I think people are all the same especially people with power. In my country we have a governor in particular region who act as an emperor just because the country has known good laws that govern them, this man use public funds as if it is his own and treat people they way he likes, the misuse of power has been here from time immemorial and so is not a new thing, even in the Bible most kings and individuals that misuse power never lasted, but lets be realistic, it is very difficult to use power very well.

In all thy getting have power, apparently, power is the ability to get things done or make things happen. Unfortunately, people abuse the use of power because (most that have it) don't know how to use it.
