I've tried almost all the proposed options for mining on the market, using video cards and processors. Frankly, at this moment the most profitable mining on modern video cards is Zcash on the Claymore. Even with the devfee and of course if your cards consume a moderate amount of energy.
MinerGate looks very comfortable, especially for beginners, but the profit gives less.
For processors, the monero is better suited, it can generally be digged on any device, unless of course it is obsolete.
It depends on what you call a modern video card. I have read here on the forum that Nvidia cards are better suited for mining Zcash although I am mining with mine Ethereum as it yields me a bit more for a card. You should check what to mine to check the profitability of a graphic card. This is what I do I go check that website and point my cards to the most profitable algorithm I see there.
