Fortune favors the bold, and sometimes the bald.
Philanthropy, may be a good may  to improve bitcoins image while doing some good ...

I am not brand new here but I am not friendly with many people yet. I have not had much to say besides a post I made in an attempt at humor, the attempt failed Smiley.

The recent hurricanes devastated Acapulco and other areas in Mexico. My wife has family, they are physically uninjured but their homes were washed out. Total loss. They were struggling before and now ... So of course I am sending some money down just to help out. It got me thinking about how people reach out when disaster strikes. Well, maybe it might be a good thing for the bitcoin community to do, as an organized effort. I think its fair to say one of the problems the project needs to overcome is the mainstream media's association of drug dealers and criminals with Bitcoin. The current image of bitcoin users is a hooded sweatshirt wearing degenerate gambler\drug dealer or some shady criminal mastermind (perhaps with a pocket protector, perhaps not). It's hard to see that type of person organizing and participating in group fundraisers to help with disaster relief and other good causes. I am not a fan of altruism for the sake of altruism, perhaps my handle gave that away. I am a fan of being socially positive and I love when I can do something I benefit from that helps others, it's win win. I doubt I am the first person to come up with this type of idea, but I would love to get a discussion going around it.

My initial thought is to come up with a way miners could opt in to donating a % of their rewards through their pool.

What do you guys think?
Is this a dumb topic and will never catch on, or does it have possibilities?

Cheers,
Aynstein
