Your friend should understand that he hasn't lost unless he sells lower than he bought. Also, he should understand those two token aren't like others because there is a reason why they have been at that position or rather unbeatable for a long time despite the market conditions.
Furthermore, should he try to invest in altcoins again do well to make him understand the volatility of this space as well as making adequate research so as to invest wisely. There are really good altcoins out there if one research cautiously and wisely.

There are predictions that the altcoin market could be like this until bitcoin surpass previous ATH again but during this time, most of the coin will die, some might likely combine to generate trade volume if they can be sustainable. IMO it is important that some altcoins die to sanitize the space and bring confidence to new investors, we might also need regulation for crypto startup that demand project prosecution of its roadmap.

Stupid confidence on other hand could end you and make all of your money disappear pretty quickly. I am not beting on ETH, there are some alt-coins or few niches of alt-coins in which I believe in but not ETH.

Your friend has a valid reason to fear what's going on with the altcoin market. After all the price of Bitcoin has somewhat recovered from the debacle of 2018. And yet why are the altcoin market is still bleeding and not follow the trend of Bitcoin? The only thing that I can think of is that there are many people who have lost confidence of most of the altcoins, even XRP and ETH because it seems it can't even get to where investors are expecting it to be at this point.

Of course, we need to think positive here and be patience on the altcoin market. I'm sure majority ouf us here has not seen how bleak altcoin would still be in 2019. So be optimistic and look for the long term benefit we can get from it in the next two or maybe three years down the road.

What really caught my attention was he is holding the two top altcoins. I might not be in his shoes to understand him but as a holder too I believe in those coins especially ETH. Like I always tell my friends who asks, I have come too far to give up especially when it comes to coins dropping in value. Since he is holding this two coins he shouldn't worry more as they (coins) have proven their value by maintaining their positions till now against all odds. Good a thing he wasn't holding coins with no use case or nothing to offer at all.

Ripple, XLM, TRX etc, they're all in losses in the last year, and Bitcoin is growing as people are starting to see that these altcoins can't deliver on their promises.

They ought to have learnt from the history of how many people were fooled by the market and development of bitcoin at the early stage, which they got so much fooled into believing that no good thing will come out of bitcoin, some even lost their wallet keys, while some threw it away, but years later, we see how most of them are now biting their fingers now in regret.

In a nutshell, I quite agree with you that this is repeating itself again in altcoins, many people are giving up now thinking the altcoin market would be dyeing anytime soon, but we really should wait for their time, and I know that the waiting will not be more than 2 years again now for us to start seeing some great increase in the investment that we have made in altcoins.

I have been involved with crypto for over 6 years now, I have seen days when ethereum didn't even existed, I have watched ethereum having its hard fork, I have seen bitcoin move from 30 dollars to 150 dollars, it has seen at most 20 thousand dollars. Basically I have been around long enough to see most important things of bitcoin aside from it actually going a bit mainstream with that first less than 1 dollar times to over 30 dollar times.

I still have hard time getting not fooled by the market sometimes, I never fully go out and I always have some crypto stashed somewhere but the market makes me feel like it could go down anytime and I really think that I should get out and use that money on more stable investments time to time, I haven't done it in the past 6 years and I doubt I will do it ever but it just makes me feel like that so I can understand newer people feeling like that.

I absolutely agree with you, the market situation presently for altcoins is making people dump their coins at loss, without thinking about what the future holds. I was astonished at the massive XRP dip which looked more like manipulation. Many people think since the ICO era has past, of which ETH was the main currency accepted for most, that ETH won't be profitable to hold for long term. This is definitely not true in my opinion, since I strongly believe the future holds great things for ETH. There are a few other altcoins (LINK, EOS, TRX) with great developmental progress I'm accumulating for long term aside ETH and XRP.

There are two school of thoughts here:

[1] Those individuals that crypto is a get rich scheme. Buy a token, recommended by someone and hope that it will go to the moon.

[2] Those individuals who are very smart, playing with their money is a big risk on them. So they would rather hold the coins for so long and wait for the market to go on a massive bull-run and book the profit.

It's really up to us. We have a choice here. We are no longer in the year wherein we are going to see x10-x50 coins in the market. Be smart, just saying.

Im also 100% in for altcoins,i do have few bitcoin but im not holding btc for long term,i have many good altcoins with good potential and im sure that the present altcoin market condition is just for a while,it will never last forever,a patient dog will always eat the fattest bone.

It will be wise to be smarter in todays market,this is nothing comparable to 2017 so i will advice you guys to pick good altcoins only,do not pick coins with no working product backing them up and when the next altcoin season comes shitcoins might not even favoured from it at like in 2017

For top coins, I agree with your opinion to hodl whenever a rapid fall happens. While for new altcoins, I am not sure to hodl, learn carefully what is happening. If the project is not promising enough or it is likely to be dead coins yet a low interest from investors, then you may consider selling than losing everything.

XRP didn't moved and instead it has went down.

We cant force people where to invest their money but im sure many will regret selling their altcoin in the near future,if people are doing better research they should have understand that we have very good altcoins that are actually better than bitcoin so instead of creating a diversified portfolio they sell all their coins for bitcoin

You are right, i remember in 2016-17 also people were in a state of despair about most of the alts and then suddenly after btc reached the peak alts started to explode and we had extremely massive pumps in most of altcoins which changed many lives so the lesson is it will happen again but we need to wait and be patient.

Tell me, which altcoins have you invested into and held for a long term. It's easy to talk and make up all these stories. How can a person not lose confidence when he bought at $1000 and it dropped to less than $100?

One should understand before investing in altcoins that the price of the coins will drop in the starting because for the first few years its impossibe to make profit out of any business. It takes time and hardwork and most importantly patience with rigorous marketing. But many give up after 2 or 3 months including the investors and the team members. When people loose confidence because of this they decide to sell all their crypto assests including eth and major cryptos which cause a drop in the price.
