I tried DOTA and LOL and didn't enjoy it. Out of the two dota seems much harder.

I am Dota player since version 6.36 of original Dota mod. And I can't understand phenomenon of LoL - that game is made for 12-15 years old at most... To play Dota you need more skill, maybe that is the factor that frighten people away.
