The CO2 footprint depends entirely on how the electricity you consume is produced.

As it was pointed out before, the btc mined with excess hydro power isn't too bad (as long as they're not eating all the power for the regular consumers leading to the construction of fossil power stations etc.), but miners in CZK for example are fucking everything up (80% of their electricity is coal I think, but the rest is renewable). Also I hear everyone talking about the hydro electricity from China, but they’re also the biggest coal consumers IIRC (no data to show for this, just memories from 5 years back).

I for one live in a country where the power is nuclear (understand negligeable pollution compared to fossil) so I don’t consider it having a big footprint. Plus, I eat <3kw so yeah…

I wouldn’t consider mining as killing the planet, but it shure ain’t helping!! (IMO, a 3kw miner with a normal car is better for the planet then a non miner with some big ass 15l/100k SUV)

PS : thanks for making my day Btc-JOE Wink

Ecology & Bitcoin Mining - What is your CO2 Footprint?

If you mine bitcoin are you helping to destroy OUR environment?

No, and certainly not like you are helping to destroy human intelligence.

Is the coin you get worth the damage we cause to our planet?

Any evidence to support your claim that the planet is being damaged? No? Then why are you even talking?

CO2 is not a pollutant, in fact it's quite beneficial to the ecosystem. Despite all the propaganda and pseudo-scientific nonsense, man-made "climate change" or "global warming" is entirely contrived. It's simply a scheme hatched by leftists to move money from rich countries like the USA to socialist/communist shitholes like venezuela.

Do we cause less damage than the Despotic Kleptocratic Banksters?

You mean socialists, communists, fascists and all other manner of leftists? Probably not, but then again, we have a whole new generation of morons who think socialism is a great idea, as they hear "free stuff" and jump all in, not realizing the truth is that the only people who benefit from any leftist political structure are the few in power and their friends.

LOL. These worthless extortion rings do nothing other than invent problems to make themselves feel relevant. They're not shutting anything down. Communism died in the 80s with the USA won over with a remarkably simple truth: capitalism benefits everyone because it offers opportunity to all individuals, without limits on success.

Thoughts appreciated.

Yeah, that much I can agree with. You're definitely not forming any thoughts of your own so maybe people here will donate some to you.

Considering most Bitcoin mining seems to be done using surplus hydro power (China, Repubic of Georgia, Washington State) or Geothermal (Iceland) it is hard to say.  Normally this means near new hydro plants that generate more power than the plant can currently sell.

So I would not see Bitcoin miners (or nodes) as a significant CO2 emitter. Especially compared to banks.
