Thanks altmine2, ya I'm mining bitcoin and have read Satoshi Nakamoto original paper on bitcoin. I get the concept, it's the execution I'm struggling with.

I should have stated things relevant to bitcoin mining. I'm currently running phoenix miner with a hash rate of 730mhz but want to improve

If you're looking to improve your hash rate there are only two options:
1) Tweak your miner's settings using guides others have posted. This is a good reference to see some peoples mining settings: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
2) Buy more video cards or an ASIC

Reading the whitepaper for the respective coin you're mining always helps. It will give you an in depth understanding of how the coin works and will allow you to spot the strengths or flaws of that particular coin.

I used to be semi fluent in c++, years ago as well as network management (Cisco networking) but have subsequently regressed into ignorance. I want to get deeper into bitcoin but I can see I need to brush up on my programming and general computer stuff and such. Dose anyone have any recommendations for things I can read that are relevant to bitcoin to better educate myself? I've been reading what I can on forums and wiki's but they don't satisfactorily explain much, I don't want to just copy and past things I want to know why. Any information would be much appreciated, thank you.
