Thanks for posting that K - it's James here from @3Dcamp. We don't have an official tagline for our 'barcamp' (informal conference) which has been running in UL for the last 5 years, but if we did it would be something like - "Where the virtual meets the real" - as 3Dcamp explores the intersection of digital and physical tech.

For example, virtual reality, 3D printing, location based gaming, augmented reality and so on. Obviously Bitcoin fits perfectly into the theme and it's something I've been interested in for about 2 years but never really took time to investigate properly until this year. So I set up a wallet on Blockchain to accept tips (payment for 3Dcamp tickets is optional) this year and it's been a blast! I'm very grateful to @DublinBrian and @BitcoinIRL for being two early tippers. And helping me to figure out how to get started.

BTW, I just read the Blazr story and... wow..... can we expect a raid on the conference?!?!  Roll Eyes

Hi, when are you planning on having this conference and where exactly is it?

Guys like Blazr are not typical bitcoin users.  The results of a survey of over 1000 bitcoin users showed that 90% have nothing to do with drugs

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Avvn4_NlztWedDh0bDEwbXFFOHBTOXhLZlNpVmhKWWc#gid=6

The sensationalist media reports of bitcoins use in black markets is not representative of the reality.

Don't know any of the people involved but saw this promoted on Twitter.
http://3dcamp.barcamp.ie/2013/05/bitcoin-panel-discussion/

It's a Bitcoin panel discussion at the 3dCamp (some sort of informal tech conference it seems) at the University of Limerick on Sat May 25th. Won't be going myself but might be of interest to some others here.

I feel confident offering this because in 2 years of using bitcoin Ive never heard of a successful double spend fraud on a shop.
There was a accidental but successful double spend during the recent hard fork (sorry, can't remember reference but it's on this forum).

I tried buying a cable worth 5 euros at GSM today with bitcoins, but they told me id have to wait 3 hours for it to confirm. Really disappointed. I know some shops in Berlin sell you coffee for bitcoins, i doubt they will ask you to wait 3 hours to have your coffee, its only 5 euros! C'mon! In the end, i ended up using FIAT for the transaction
Id be happy to insure any bricks and mortar shop like GSMSolutions against a "double spend" fraud by donating €100 or 100mBTC to an escrow account controlled by both myself and the shop.

The escrow could be done with the multisig feature of bitcoin but Im having difficulty getting multisig transactions to work. So if someone more technically proficient would like to assist, Id be grateful.

To be clear, this would be a donation on my part in order to promote bitcoin adoption by shops and demonstrate the security of bitcoin transactions.

I have neither tried nor studied them. Presumably they run in browser javascript. If only BFL would accept this for payment for a jalapeño!

During our meeting I mentioned deniably encrypted filesystems with multiple hidden volumes and complicated block analysis thwarting: rubberhosefs and phonebookfs. I can't find a link to phonebookfs anymore, though I do have the source code somewhere. I remember I tried compiling and using them as an academic exercise without success.

Rubberhose filesystem

More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deniable_encryption

edit: found it: phonebookfs

also, Bruce Schneier says a bit about rubberhosefs

another edit: forgot to say, these systems are obsolete, unmaintained and probably insecure.

Feelgood story of the day:  Don't know if you guys will recall .. but this was the cool story of the shelter I was on about that was (and still is) funded by BTC ... https://www.smore.com/t3y6 ... stories like this help reinforce BTC's credibility methinks ... would it be worth it proposing the same concept to an Irish charity to raise BTC's awareness and support a worthwhile cause to boot?

Don't know why I actually didn't mention it earlier, but:

I wonder would it be clever to pre-print a receipt in two copies before meeting someone, with a declaration along the lines of "The bitcoins being exchanged for €XXX at exchange rate €YYY/BTC to be sent to address 1ADDRESS, will not be utilised for any illicit activity and the buyer indemnifies the seller of any responsibility thereof." Then ask the buyer for ID which you photograph and fill in on the receipt before accepting any money, both parties sign and take a copy. At least then you have a written record to show a judge, just in case.

Thats a good idea. It probably wouldnt do any good. I dont believe the authorities are that interested in the drugs side. This is about protecting banks monopoly on issuance of money. They are using the drugs war as a excuse.

Hey, I just realised this is the first time I've paid for dinner, or any food, with bitcoins! Thanks to all, great meeting. I'm gonna think some more about the ideas we spoke about. http://blockchain.info/tx/a1c25ceceee7b4eaf47bc3395d7f08024f8c3423d96975175ad65a48596927dd

Curious about that blazr link. Nothing illicit changed hands so it's a bit bizarre that the police would manage to get a warrant. I expect you need a warrant to intercept post too. At least then you have a written record to show a judge, just in case.

edit: I wonder will blazr be getting letters from the revenue authorities. €500 in cash is probably enough to raise a flag. Actually, anybody using this forum, or localbitcoins or similar, and has left a meatspace trail, has probably been flagged by now.

*facepalm* *facepalm* *facepalm* *facepalm* *facepalm*

There I was on the train north out of Dublin, listening to a girl about the age of my youngest complaining about not being able to change her Euros to Sterling on a Sunday night, and thinking how much easier these things would be if *everyone* used bitcoin, and thinking about how after Saturdays' meetup everything in the bitcoin world seemed to be in a good place. I didn't take the opportunity to talk to those kids about bitcoin because I'd offered to put bitcoin on my daughter's smartphone and her reaction was to wonder why her dad would want *any* connection with drugs. *sigh*

So last night when I read up on the various posts and read the Blazr link I was fuming. I've calmed down overnight, and had a think about whether I should post anything about what is *potentially* a major PR disaster for bitcoin, for the cops, for Ireland's exporting SME's, and for Ireland's tourist trade. ( these two threads have 6000+ reads potentially world-wide so it may be only a matter of time )

I can't speak for the Guards, or even for the local cops, but I would expect that there would be some who are into bitcoin and I'd guess their reaction will be *facepalm* ... FWIW I had some involvement with bulletin boards way back when, and cops were involved in that community. If you knew, you kept *schtum* for obvious reasons. The real issue here seems to be a  Judge who has never heard of Die Antwoord ... JIK ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Uee_mcxvrw

I have other interests besides bitcoin, hence while I was in Dublin I bought a 100g high precision LCD scale. So check that. Carries bitcoin and fiat monies around. Check there too. Mining rig pushes up electricity intake and the heat signature of the house. Check there also.

I'm *entirely* legit, and no, the idea that I have nothing to hide and therefore would be content to have a body cavity search carried out on my person is a non-starter. I've had that done by an attractive young lady on the national health and ... for the curious I might explain everything at our next meeting.

*sigh* I'll say it again. The cops I've met are decent hardworking guys and girls trying to do their best for their communities. I'd read that the Bitcoin Foundation would be supportive of local chapters. Until now I thought that layer of bureaucracy was more trouble than it was worth.

*facepalm* *facepalm* *facepalm*

I'm still on for the meeting. 4pm Saturday at the Bull & Castle, Lord Edward St. Seems there'll be 8 or 9 of us. See ye there. Remember - bring a PGP key for signing if you like and maybe a couple of paper wallets with a bitcent preloaded (~€1), for tips.

Excellent, I look forward to it! Smiley
As far as tipping and paper wallets go, most folks nowadays have a smartphone that they'd be able to download a Bitcoin wallet app onto. Maybe as well as the paper wallets themselves we should bring some small 'flash-card' style instructions on how to redeem the paper wallets (we have the blockchain.info app on both iOS and Android, for example) and a QR-code link to BitMit (or any Bitcoin store/site) that the staff can just scan and immediately go somewhere they can spend their BTC and have a real, tangible product delivered to them.

There are a lot of people out there that are completely unfamiliar with digital currency and wouldn't necessarily understand the distinction between an actual digital currency such as Bitcoin (which can be used to buy any real tangible product) and a virtual gaming currency such as Second Life Linden Dollars (which can only be used to buy a virtual product).

If they have a simple way of obtaining a good or a service for their 'digital funny money' they'd be more likely to see that it serves as an actual method of payment for real world products. Judging from my own thoughts on it, if I had received a paper wallet a couple of years back loaded with a digital currency - having absolutely no idea about it's value or potential - I most likely would have just thrown it out with the used receipts and rubbish. Undecided

Bull & Castle seems ok to me. Only doubt: if we want to talk then it's no good if there'll be constant loud music - that's why I suggested a hotel lounge. But if this place fits the bill, then I'm game.

We have:
dbulinbrian
mahkul
nereer
fergalish

Neither bowen151 nor blazr have replied again. I'd PM again, but I already told them about this thread, so I'd prefer not to spam.

Hey - let's turn it into a PGP signing meeting, so bring your key fingerprint, and, I'd say, bring a couple of paper wallets each with a couple of euros - we can use them for tipping the bar staff.

So, excepting indications to the contrary, the date is set for April 27th at the Bull & Castle, Lord Edward Street.  There are only 4 definites, so I'd say to meet there at about 4pm.

Get your brains working about how to increase bitcoin adoption in Ireland!

Ok. Unless someone else can come up with a reason against, I herewith call the meeting for the 27th afternoon in Dublin. Any suggestions for the location? I haven't lived in Dublin for 20 years, so I don't know what hotel might have a decent lounge and a good but reasonably priced restaurant.

If there are enough of us (say, more than 5), I'd say to meet for lunch, maybe tea & sandwiches from the bar, and if anyone's has anything particular to say we could rig up a timetable with informal seminars delivered from a laptop. More likely, if there only 3-5 of us, then we'll meet around 4pm and just chat.

Are there any miners operating in Ireland?

Apologies for the off-topic. Bitcoin was the subject of today's Derek Mooney's show on RTE Radio 1! I was tempted to give him a call, but it was quite short. Anyone listened to it? I wonder who was the Irish woman he was talking to.

EDIT: Just to confirm I am up for the meeting and I don't know Dublin too well either.

I've had a couple of replies. One from Derry, one from somewhere, and I'm in Cork. The most logical place to hold it would be Dublin - it's the de facto centre of the island's transport web.

How about the last weekend in April? We could meet in some city centre location for lunch on Sat. 27th, then chat all afternoon, and finish off with dinner and say goodbye. And then finish off for real with a pint or two.

Would we want something so formal as a meeting room, maybe with a projector, or will it be enough to occupy the corner of a public house, or maybe a hotel lounge? I'd go for the hotel lounge.

So far we have:
bowen151
blazr
mahkul
dublinbrian
fergalish

Any additions?

I guess there would be no need for a meeting room; a hotel lounge would be perfect I think. I simply would love to see who else is into Bitcoin here and what we could do together to promote it in the country. Also, 27th of April would be okay for me.

I would be very interested in discussing how to legally accept coins in Ireland as a business in exchange for services (and perhaps even goods). I am available for a meeting any time really, just need to know about it a week or two beforehand. Anyone else? Any other people running business interested in accepting BTC?
I've just PMd everyone who has posted in this thread, fortunately there aren't many. Let's see who responds.

Howdy. With the recent bump in price, I'm seeing that there's gonna be a lot of people and alot of companies curious about bitcoin and wanting to try it on for size. Anyone fancy a meeting? I'd suggest aiming small and soon, maybe mid-April. There's lots to discuss:

1. Promoting bitcoin in Ireland
2. Organizing an (inter) national bitcoin conference (we'd need funding)
3. Law & taxation

and more?

I still own bitcoin.ie.

If I were to sell it, I would have to make sure it's going to someone who has a plan, skills and time to make some good use of it. Some may say that anything would be better than just sitting on the domain, but I had already set up a website and a forum in the past (two years ago or so) and there was no interest whatsoever, so I took it down (the only users of the forum were Russian bots).

If anyone is interested please PM me with your ideas on what to do with the domain.

No longer mining. Trading though.

Struggling to find local traders though.

What happened to bitcoin.ie by the way? Any interest in selling?

BUMP!

Just wondering if the number of coiners from our wee island has gone up or down Smiley

Chime in if you see this and your mining or spending BTC from ireland.

I know i helped a few miners in my city and told a countless amount about bitcoin, so funny explaining that its a digital currency and then pulling out a casascius coin lol. Talk about fucking with someones mind!

It's a nice idea, how many are there around the country.
I can't commit to anything at the moment, maybe earlier next year I could attend one.

switchpoker and bitcoin24/7 are both run by sawadeesoft.
switchpoker was launched with it's eyes on mobile poker.
They seem reputable and switchpoker was mentioned in silicone republic.

"Sawadee" is Thai but for all instances it looks like an Irish company.
Seems legit.

Another Irish here. I know there are others around too on the forum but haven't met any IRL.

As a matter of curiosity, does anyone know anything about https://www.bitcoin247.com/en. They seem to do the payments for Switchpoker and claim to be based in Ballsbridge.

I'm not in Ireland, but I do have a suggestion for an Irish business to approach about bitcoin. I sometimes trade at a site called Intrade. They run a prediction market using fiat currencies. Bitcoin would work so well for them, It's a natural fit. Check em out.

Ive stopped promoting bitcoin since then, because Ive got other things going on but I hope to resume my marketing activities around the end of this year.

Same here, I just got fed up with lack of response and interest. I was nearly banned from boards.ie for mentioning bitcoin, they closed the thread and said it was a "Pyramid scheme". Similar kind of thing happened to my friend April.

Would be great if we could organise some sort of a meet-up and see how many and what kind of people are really diggin' it. I live around Wexford and I am open to any suggestions, can travel to Dublin or Cork no problem. Where are you guys from?

Sure, fair point. I haven't been involved in here for the last year or so, thus I don' really know how popular (if at all) Bitcoin got in Ireland.
IMO bitcoin is very popular in Ireland, relatively speaking. But Id like to see us capitalise on that, and take it to the next level.

I want to expand the userbase in Ireland. Im particularly interested in getting businesses to accept it. I myself have approached numerous online businesses and donation accepting sites, and suggested that they accept btc payment. None of them have take up the idea.

Hi lads,

I have shut down the Irish forum, because there was no interest whatsoever for months. All we were getting was myriads spammers.

Would anyone be interested in giving me a hand with an Irish website and forum?
Yeah, I could give you a hand. But is the community big enough to require a dedicated forum? Even the UK Bitcoin forum run by Vladimir, seems dead most of the time.

Why not just use this thread for Irish stuff?

New here and Irish.
I'll check out the Irish forum too.
I've got nothing to offer but will trade for bc down in cork.
edit
seems bitcoin.ie/forum is no more.
Yeah, bitcoin.ie is no more.

Theres quite a few irish involved in bitcoin. But afaik there has never been a meetup or anything.

We need to draw up a list of irish businesses and lobby them to accept bitcoin payment. Im thinking Kennys bookstore does a lot of online business and would be a good candidate.
