Limited in number. Limitless in potential.

i do have the private key though.

I hope you have your coins on only one address, and if this is the case that private key is the only thing that is important for recovery. But a private key won't help you if you used multiple receiving addresses and also an option of change address. It's weird that you didn't use the option of seed backup, and even worse is that you forgot your password. The best thing would be to try to find a password, then to visit the official Electrum site and download the latest version for your OS.
Yeah, that's frustrating if OP's using multiple address on that wallet. Best thing to do is download the latest version of electrum and try to remember your password for the .dat file you have.

Using your mobile wallet as your primary wallet is far from the best possible solution, especially if you have some significant amount of coins.

Signature space for rent
I had faced same problems few days back. Since I was aware about electrum phishing I didn't tried to update it from software. I know there is a update button on electrum but I use direct website for update. What I did, just open original electrum website and reinstall electrum again. That's it, my wallet updated and still I am using without any error messages. You might do it by this way. Nothing to worry since you private key, you might use any wallet who is support import private key. So use any of them for take out your fund.

connecting to ecdsa server. must be the reason why i thought i forgot my password. i really believe i have the right password but it always says incorrect so maybe it just need to be updated.
your password being incorrect has nothing to do with upgrading Electrum itself. you can click on the seed icon at the bottom  right side of the wallet window and it should ask you for your password. enter it and see if it shows you the seed or an error. if it does show the seed then write it down on a paper and you are good to go.

by the way it does not matter how long you leave this open, the moment you connect to a legitimate Electrum server your wallet's network instance crashes and it gets stuck. this is intentional to force everyone to upgrade to latest version in order to avoid losing money due to another vulnerability that existed in older versions.

i can import using my privatekey to a mobile wallet correct?

Yes, there is even a mobile version of Electrum so you can use it if you don't want to bother with looking for another option. Select 'Wallet -> Private Keys -> Export' to get your keys.

Unless you run your own Electrum server (with outdated software) and connect Electrum to it, then no.

If you have the private key, you could import it to wallet that you currently use.

No. Versions older than 3.3 don't synchronize anymore AND are also vulnerable to fake update messages with links to infected software. Please update immediatelly.

Don't forget JSONRPC vulnerability as well.

Also make sure to double check the url of the site you are downloading from (electrum.org) and verify Electrum's signature before installing it.

i haven't open my wallet for a long time. i'm synchronizing it for almost 6 hours but nothing had happen. worse is that I have forgotten its password. i do have the private key though. do I need to upgrade the wallet before synchronizing it again?

in upgrading, i will have to download the exe file again or is there a button to just click and will upgrade automatically.  right now, i'm most of the time just using mobile wallet so I haven't used this wallet of mine for a longtime.
